Is there any way to configure IE7 to download programs to desktop instead of some other folder? Thanks for any help
When you start a download, you get a dialog box that shows your current default download folder. You can accept that as is, or change it to something else. If you change it, the new folder you select will become the default download folder in the future.
Tip: The next time you go to do a download and the dialog box pops up, insert the following text in front of the filename that's already there:%userprofile%\Desktop\(Note that there should be no spaces between that last backslash ["\"] and the first letter of the filename).
I don't use IE much, but I believe, that once download folder is set, that pop-up is not present anymore. Am I wrong?Quote:

- Went to MajorGeeks.com.
- Clicked "DriverView 1.1.4" (simply because it was a small [33.6KB] download).
- When the page changed, I chose the last "MajorGeeks FL - |USA|" link.
- On the next page, I ignored the download bar at the top and clicked the "Click here if it does not." link.
- Internet Explorer popped up its "File Download" box asking "Do you want to open or save this file?". The available buttons were "Open", "Save" or "Cancel". I clicked the "Save" button.
- Internet Explorer popped up its "Save As" dialog box wanting to know where I wanted to save the file. It was currently in some folder named "Recieved" (sic) where my wife had last downloaded a file. The name of the file, "driverview.zip", was in the "File name: " box. I inserted "%userprofile%\Desktop\" before the file name, like so:
%userprofile%\Desktop\driverview.zipand clicked the "Save" button.
- When the download was complete, ("Download Complete" box), I clicked the "Close" button.
- Checked my Desktop and sure enough, driverview.zip was there.

Went back to MajorGeeks.com and repeated steps 1-5 above. When I got to step 6 this time though, the "Save As" dialog box was pointing to the "Desktop", where I had last saved the file. When I clicked the "Save" button, Internet Explorer popped up warning that "driverview.zip" already existed on my Desktop and wanted to know "Do you want to replace it?"; I clicked the "Yes" button. When the download was complete, ("Download Complete" box), I clicked the "Close" button.
In other words, my Internet Explorer 7 remembers where I last saved a file. :)
Thanks Very much to all responders. I believe with the info given that I'll be able to configure IE7 to send downloads to my desktop. No more searching for my downloads location. Thanks again.

My bad, then. Sorry :)
You're welcome sheprd ... and no problem Broni. :)
sheprd--If you install TweakUI, in the left panel click on Common Dialog|Places Bar. Then fill in the Custom Places Bar radio button. You now can chose up to five folders to which you can direct downloads with just one click. Click Apply|OK.
Once set up the chosen folders will appear as links to the left of the usual Download window.
If you use WinXP you will want to install TweakUI for Windows XP. You get it here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx (right hand column)
If you use another version on Windows post back for its version of TweakUI.
I personally just set my browers to C:\My Downloads
a folder I create myself ... later I move the file to where
I want it. Sometimes in C:\Downloads .. or sometimes
in C:\My Download Files ... I also subfolder both of the
above, so I always can find any program very easily.
I do the same for torrents ... C:\My Torrent Downloads
or for ftp files .. C:\My Ftp Downloads ... and none of these
are in the My Docs folder, but on the root C drive
Do much the same here but I name the folder with a leading underscore character ("_"). Why? Simply because it forces Windows Explorer to place it at the top of an alphabetically sorted, ascending ordered list of folders. :)
Take the check out of Close this dialog box when download completes
http://www.philippinerevolution.net/...ch/dlab_05.gif
Then you will see this:
http://www.philippinerevolution.net/...ch/dlab_06.gif
Open starts whatever you downloaded and Open Folder open to whereever you saved it.
You can also change that by in IE go to the menu, tools, internet options and put a check in "Notify when downloads complete"
