Hi Elaine, I knew a number of them, the cat gut one intrigued me as a child and my mother calmed me down by explaining it. I have a friend who grows Kiwi Fruit commercially, if you have never tried it do yourself a favour, mix with a good sparkling wine (not that overpriced French ) and you are in heaven.

The "black box" is actually red.

IMHO, more of a bright orange than true red:

I wonder how the recorders got the black box handle when they've never been black? That must be a generic term for electronic devices.

Hi the term "black box" refers to the science of black magic ie what went on in there was a mystery to most people so a generic term was created. The first boxes were painted Red then latter bright Orange

"Dr David Warren of the Aeronautical Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Australia invented the "Black Box" flight data recorder" The first one developed was in 1953 commercially they became available in 1957.
