Hi Elaine and the Jones boy, when you buy something new you expect it to be better than what it replaces. All of us that have moved to Vista want it to work, we expect better performance and features to be improved, otherwise we look silly for our purchase. I remember a friend who bought a new car that turned out to be a lemon he always said the salesman sold it to him, unlike another friend who's car was great he always said he bought it. This is human nature. I have XP and Vista dual booted, I like the new product more than the old, performance is better, stability far superior and security a vast improvement. I still however can not better 2k it outperforms Vista and XP for the general tasks I use it for and it resides on a computer no where near as powerful as this one. Choice here is the issue and for MS I think some of the pricing for Vista has been a big turn off.

"Vista has bloat!"...and so what else is new? So did every OS that has come out until now. Even Windows for Workgroups 3.11 had some bloat. :D Bloat can be dealt a lethal blow with just a few keystrokes. Are we that lazy?
"Vista is slow!"....in a couple of ways, but that will be mostly taken care of with SP1. And if you tweak, tweak, tweak....problem solved.
Now that I mentioned it, I read on another forum (can't remember which one) where a Vista basher was in a huff, lambasting Vista's slowness. I challenged him by asking what his system specs were. Yeah....you guessed it....barely above the minimum system requirements and he was running Ultimate with the Dreamscenes. Well DUH. Developers of new OS's, along with games and apps are NOT going to cater to the Pentium 4 crowd. Nothing necessarily wrong with P4's....they are just getting old. Sorry. To survive, developers must optimize their products to match the hardware that is coming out (and vice-versa). System requirements are going UP, not down. If a person doesn't want to upgrade, then they have no argument as to why a new OS runs slow on their machine.
"Vista is overpriced!" So are cars, furniture and homes. Welcome to modern times. I've heard people justifying their balking by seriously claiming that Microsoft should have offered all that Vista has as a FREE UPGRADE to XP. Well, that speaks volumes. All the Vista bashing for them really just comes down to money. OK....tell you what we can do. Let's all take a field trip to Redmond and meet with the developers and programmers and tell them we want them to work for free for the next 4 years.
I expect we'll see people kicking and screaming about Vista until its support is no longer offered by MS. Meanwhile they'll be kicking and screaming about the next OS which, by the way, will have bloat, will be expensive and will demand more advanced hardware. I guarantee it.

:D Nah....I read awhile back about the thrip problem they were having in the UK....those little suckers were invading the interior of people's LCD screens and driving them mad. :D
Well, if you ever hear of a way to get rid of them, please post it as I can`t get rid of this one. :D

Very interesting article, Jim...hopefuly MS will learn from this, but I'm not holding my breath.
I knew that Micropuff committed many unforgivable sins in their marketing of Vista....misled the general public actually; especially with their Minimum and Recommended System requirements for Vista...very misleading IMHO.
BUT....any PC enthusiast who surfed the net during the early days of Vista knew damn well that it was a demanding OS. The avalanche of information on that topic was there for all to see, yet thousands of those people STILL tried to install it on underpowered machines and got zapped. Windows Vista compatibility problems with certain hardware was WELL publicized, yet a lot of folks said "Damn the torpedoes...full speed ahead" and ended up getting torpedoed themselves. And they all end up bashing Vista in forums and writing sour grapes stories in PC articles/reviews.
I am not a Vista "fanboy", but I run and like Vista Ultimate 64-bit. But I did not just walk into it because it was new....I researched it and tried it out thoroughly before I upgraded. I also knew ahead of time that my system was more than adequate to handle Vista.
What I preach here and in other forums is that, if you have an underpowered machine, STICK WITH XP. XP Pro is a great OS! Stay with it until you get a better machine. There's no sin in that.
"But....but....but....my machine meets the minimum system requirements!" Other people may say, "But...but...but...my system meets the RECOMMENDED system requirements!" To both of those groups I say to WAIT! Both of those requirements are a bunch of baloney IMHO....especially the minimum system requirements (MSR). Those MSRs are like trying to put premium jet fuel into a lawnmower....a complete waste. It might start; it might even run for awhile; but it will conk out on you....it just won't be able to handle it. It's almost the same for those RSRs.
Vista will run on a 1.0 ghz system with 1GB of memory and onboard graphics. I said it will "run", not perform. The moment you try to play a game (any of the newer ones), print a document or try to render a drawing or photo, it is going to grind down to the speed of roadkill. Most of the general public does NOT realize this, so they end up complaining about how slow Vista runs on their machine....well, Duh. Yes, MS was dead wrong to label certain systems as being Vista-capable....yeah....maybe Vista Basic capable, but not the other versions.
IMHO, the STANDARD system requirements, requirements for Vista to run properly and with some decent performance, ought to be to have at least 2 ghz of CPU and 2GB of memory and use a graphics card that is fairly new (i.e Nvidia 8600 series and above). Yeah, yeah, yeah....I know some people have less than that and are running Vista. But if you want Vista performance, you need to beef up the hardware...and ignore Micropoop's "Vista-Whatever" labeling system.

I am running Vista on two of my systems, one being my laptop and the other my main system. Vista runs very well on both machines. My other systems are still running XP Pro as they in my opinion do not have the stuff to run Vista yet. But they all meet or exceed minimum system requirements.
