Is any one Socket better than another?
I'm thinking about upgrading from a 939 to ?
And could use any info about the benefits of one Socket over another.
Thanks

It not so much the socket anymore, but you want to figure out the cpu to what you want to do, then get a mobo for that cpu.
Gaming, video work, etc. do make a big difference and the budget is the overal limiter.
So post what you want to do and a budget and possibly we can point you in the direction you want.
Now just looked at http://www.falcon-nw.com/config/build.asp bragging rights where they start at $15,000+
If you are thinking of upgrading, then I would choose Intel over AMD right at the moment, they are better on both price and performance. Not to mention the rather nasty bug in the quad-core chips  Socket 775 will do all current Intel CPUs.
What nasty bug, is it in both the Intel and AMD cores?
No, it is only in the new 4-Core Opteron (Barcelona) and Phenom chips.

Thanks, that was good reading, or bad depending on how you want to look at it. I've been a AMD fan for a long time..
I decided a long time ago to be a fan of neither (or both, depending on how you look at it). There are times when Intel is on top, as now, and other times when AMD is the best (such as when the best Intel could do was the Netburst P4). So I build my PCs with whatever happens to be the better CPU at the time.
I am still a AMD fan, I know they are not on par with Intel for out right performance. I just ordered a new AM2 6000X2, two gigs of Corsairs finest DDR2 and a new Asus mainboard. Still have not made my mind up yet on what to top it off with for gfx. I think it will be a screamer even though its old tech. I wouldn't touch the four core AMD's until they get the bugs out.
Sparks is right if its all out performance you want and have no loyalties then Intel is the best way to go.
