Where abouts in the Registry are the entries for the file extensions? Not for the associations, but for actually having the type of entension showing in the file name. ie; someprogram.exe
I am trying to help someone who's .exe extension are not showing. They work fine, just do not show up. All other file extensions do show. Unchecking the box in folder options does not do anything help.
are you sure the person hasnt renamed the file and accidentally removed the extension? does the file work?

It is the same for every .exe file that he downloads. What he is doing is manually renaming the file(s).
And if he doesn't rename them are they ok?

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile
That is to "Display" the file extension
I`m in Vista at the moment so I can`t check all the defaults for you
Could do it later though if necessary

Yes, all the .exe files work ok, they just will not display the extension.
I will check my registry and pass on the info for him to check Elaine.

You are right it is located in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile
The value NeverShowExt should be deleted if present.
This could be a symptom of a virus/worm.
Scan at least with two different scanners

Seems like his reg values are exactly the same as I have. Anything else I can try?
If there is no value NeverShowExt present in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile you might try the EXEFix from kellys-korner.
There could be an 'EditFlags' value somewhere which causes the extension to be hidden.
Search the registry for
NeverShowExt
It can be in other places too

is a .reg file to set all exefile settings to default.
Maybe using it will fix whatever is causing the problem.
