cant connect to internet through router

so here it is. i have recieved my new router in the post earlier today. i set it up on my pc successfuly (or so it said) and the end of setup opened my browser with the dlink.com homepage. tring to use the internet now though for some reason i cant see anything. i used the reset button on the back and setup the router again (both times with the setup cd) but setup kept failing saying that it had no adsl connection. i plugged the router into my laptop and ran the setup again and this time it worked fine. i am writing this on my laptop now but when i plug my pc into another port on the router i still get the same problem. i can get to the router setup page (192.168.1.1) but that doesnt help me.

i have tried both IE 7 and Firefox but both are the same. IE does say at the bottom connecting to site 1.0.0.0.

Anybody have any idea whats going on here? the pc is running XP home and the laptop XP Pro. I have disabled zonealarm and have turned off windows firewall on the pc but still nothing.

DNS problem. i got the ip address of yahoo from the laptop and whacked it into the pc and yahoo came up fine. i changed the tcp/ip settings to use the dns servers of opendns ( http://www.opendns.com ) and now it works fine. still strange that the laptop tcp/ip DNS is set to obtain dns server automatically (as was the pc) but only the laptop dns worked.

still, got the problem sorted now but if anybody has any ideas on why this hapenned i would still like to know just out of curiosity.

Generally, unplugging the power from the modem, wait 15 seconds, then repowering it clears those type of problems.

Did you do an 'ipconfig /renew' on the desktop computer? Also do 'ipconfig /?' and you'll see a few DHCP and DNS related parameters that you might want to give a try.

Your modem may have a router function too. If it does and neither the modem nor the router is at least set to 'auto' with respect to the activation of the DHCP server that can result in an unwanted 'fight for power' between the two DHCP servers with unpredictable results. Can't hurt to check.

it is both a router and modem, a router/modem if you prefer. It is indeed set as my dhcp server and the DNS ip is specified in the router configuration application. I could get to websites via their ip address on the pc but couldn't get to the DNS server ip address.

i have just reset my DNS to automatic on my NIC and tried some of the switches in ipconfig. flushdns then tried google.com came up with "connecting to 1.0.0.0"

displaydns gave me details of 1.0.0.127 in-addr.arpa which is my localhost reverse lookup yes? also my localhost ip 127.0.0.1. thats all

register DNS solved nothing too. same problem connecting to 1.0.0.0

I didn't see anyone provide an answer to this, but I found a couple on the internet.

1. Go into the properties for your ethernet adapter, and disable or uninstall the IPv6. I uninstalled it and it worked beautifully.

2. Manually add DNS server information on your DSL or Cable modem or in the IP settings of your ethernet card. I didn't try this since option 1 worked for me.

This was indeed frustrating since I ran into this issue on the same lapop twice. I couldn't figure out why it was doing this, and I knew my ISP was fine, so I finally reinstalled Windows and it worked. However, after the reinstall, things were working fine until I went into the Add/Remove Windows Components and selected some additional items to install. Under the Networking Services category, I added the Peer-to-Peer and the Simple TCP/IP Services. Under the Management and Monitoring Tools category, I added the Simple Network Management Protocol. After installing these items is when the problems started. Simply uninstalling did not fix the problem. I had to uninstall the IPv6 in my ethernet card properties to fix it. I assume that one of those added items needed to install IPv6 in order to work. I compared my ethernet card settings with other computers in my network and found that none of them had IPv6 installed, which would indicate why I never had any of these issues on those computers.

How problem Solved

i had the same problem in windows xp. when i try to connect any website it try to contact 1.0.0.0 for that i have also remove "Microsoft IP version 6" and now every thing is ok. my computer can browse any website. the actual problem occured when i have install peer-to-peer services from Add/remove windows components. so please remove that service if u are getting problem and also remove the IPv6 from your local area connection-->properties or ethernet card settings.

Do you have any server functions running on your network? No proxy servers involved anywhere? Any internet/network using software running that uses uPNP that might interfere with the router's configuration? What happens in safe mode with network enabled? What happens if you disconnect all other computers from the thing? What modem/router(/switch) is it exactly (link please)?

Oh yes and tried with firewall disabled?

my network consists of 2 desktops wired directly to one another and a laptop. no proxy.

I have already fixed this problem btw if you didnt read that. i changed the DNS server ip. either way, my laptop doesnt have ipv6 installed and this one does so im guesing that this is the problem.

Im aware of what ipv6 is for, longer ip addresses right? for when ipv4 is all used up? but why do i have it on my pc now? does it do anything at the moment?
