It seems to me that it would be useful to have some kind of "General computer related topics" subforum for those threads that really do not fit under the heading of any of the other subforums. Those computer related 'odds and ends' kind of threads. Since the 'Lounge' is supposed to be about non computer related topics such threads are not supposed to go there.
Currently these threads are 'homeless'. :(

Not really. That’s about hardware problems. I'm thinking more along the lines of a subforum where you can post links to interesting/strange/funny IT news or write down some computer related observations you feel deserve attention or whatever.
But not specifically geared towards solving some computer problem. Which is of course the main goal of this forum but just one subforum where it doesn't HAVE to be about computer problems won't exactly undermine that goal methinks.

In the mean time, I moved your "Oops" thread to the Doctor's Lounge.
You can use this lounge for computer-related topics that don't fit elsewhere. If there's something IT related of a whimsical nature you can certainly post it here.
The fact that I wasn't able to really find the right subforum for that one was partly what inspired this thread. Since it was all essentially computer related I felt it also didn't really fit there. So I chose the most general subforum I could find. But an even more general subforum as the one I am suggesting would have been the right place for such a thread.

The problem with a general subform, is that it will become a catchall. You will end up finding everything and anything in it including threads that really belong elsewhere
Which will then create a lot more work for the moderators to move the threads to the correct forum.
I see no need for VDR to have an "Other" forum.

"News, thoughts and other computer stuff."
Don't ask for help here.
That's what all the other subforums are for.
You'd have to pretty dense not to understand that you shouldn't post threads asking for help with problems there.
And if it had existed it would have prevented the need to move my other thread so it can have a positive effect in that respect too.

If you're referring to your "Trusted Computing". Do we trust IT? thread, then the forum it's in is the appropriate one. That's what that forum is for, tidbits and info of an I.T. nature
Since I'm not 'speaking' to anyone I cannot really be impolite. For that you'd have to address someone. Please don't assume what I am trying to convey but read what I actually say. And I'm just saying that you can make the intended purpose of a particular subforum very clear by describing it very clearly. And IF that for instance would be done in the way of the example I gave then I don't think many people would consider anyone ignoring such a clearly stated purpose of a subforum as being particularly observant.Quote:

The closed thread about the ABIT components was not closed for a good reason IMHO. I'd think that such a warning based on personal experience had a very real value for everyone who might have wanted to buy an active chipset cooler as a result of reading that thread. I don't think it was a thread with much potential for response because it just pointed people to a site where they could buy certain components so Hijacking :confused:
Coincidentally just today I read a comment by someone on some other site saying how positive he felt about the trend that hardware manufacturers (apparently) were moving towards fanless systems. If true it is news to me but I shared his enthusiasm for the concept.
And if I ask for help in finding a relatively simple freeware utility I suddenly am accused in a very real impolite way where I was addressed very personally of wanting to steal the bread from a programmers mouth (and I'm paraphrasing it mildly here). As if no one before or since has made a similar request for a freeware program. I didn't think I committed a cardinal sin or some heinous crime in making that request because many others do make similar request so yeah. When someone else who probably hadn't read the thread very well REALLY became insulting I didn't descend to the same level because I just don't do that but I felt that a strong dose of sarcasm was entirely warranted. I wouldn't have taken it any further but that could not have become clear because the thread was closed. I again took the trouble to write to the moderator informing him of my views in the matter and that I simply don’t DO flame wars because I don't stoop to that level and that the reaction I had given was just about the strongest phrased posting I EVER made. And I have made a few thousands. Never resulting in any unpleasantness. Since closing the thread also effectively killed any future responses to my question I also asked how he thought I could best approach that. Unfortunately I didn't get an answer.
And no. I wasn't referring to my thread about Trusted Computing but to my "Oops" thread which I had considered posting in the Lounge but had decided against it because that is supposed not to be about computers. Which I think is a good idea because there is more in life than computers. Which is why I wanted to keep that particular subforum 'computer free' and didn't want to post it there. And which is why I thought it would be a good idea to also have another subforum that is not specifically geared towards solving computer problems but IS about computers.
I only tried to make a suggestion about what I considered could be a small improvement of the forum. Which I thought we are invited to do in a Feedback subforum where we are asked to "Share comments, feedback, etc. about VirtualDr."
So far...... not too inviting I regret to have to say.
A forum like this can only exist because of the voluntary efforts of its participants. That often quite considerable effort should be respected in my opinion. If anything moderators should help to motivate people to put their efforts in giving others the benefit of their experience and knowledge.
And lastly. Regarding the "Wisdom of my signature". It's one of those humorous lines you come across on the internet. I found it and thought it was funny as I am sure most of you do too. I can't really imagine anyone mistaking it as an intention to insult anyone in general or in particular. It's just a bit of humour with a funny line.
Assuming that remark wasn't meant in another way. Because I do see another possible meaning.
Since, as I indicated near the start of this posting, I was/am not in favour of taking this thread in this direction I will leave it at this. Since I know myself and my intentions I felt that the remarks that were so casually made were not justified and required a response.
So if anyone should take this line much further in this thread... I won't.
Let's continue in a more constructive way shall we?

Making a suggestion concerning the forum is not a problem and it is what this sub forum is for.
I'm sorry you didn't understand what I was referring to. Since your remark was a direct response to Linda Hewitt, it sure seemed you were speaking to her. It's not what was said so much as the way it was said.
