Help -- Microsoft Security Update for Office 2007

A couple of days ago, an associate sent me an Office 2007 Word file, which I could not open. To solve this problem, I downloaded and installed the File Format Converters for Office 2007 (Word, Excel & PowerPoint).

Yesterday, I started getting nagged to download a security update for Office 2007. I am currently using Office 2003, since Office 2007 cannot be installed on W2K.

Although I have not installed this Office 2007 update, I don't know what to do. Given the problems with previous updates, I suspect that this is a gotcha that Microsoft developers did not think of.

What should I do?

How do I eliminate the Windows update nagger? How do I prevent this security update from be installed the next time that I reboot my computer.

If the security update is installed, are there any consequences?

My guess is that it IS a valid security update as you have in a way installed an Office 2007 product, albeit a convertor. I guess it needs to be aware of security precautions to prevent it from converting a malicious word document, etc to Office 2003.

If you do not want to download it, you can go to the MS update website, and presuming you are using Windows Update (as opposed to Microsoft Update), you can select that particular update and ask it not to notify you again.

Although I have downloaded this update, I have decided that I don't want to take the chance. I have spent the last two days searching the net, and Microsoft.com trying to find out why this update is being applied to the converters, if it is. What I did find was details on lots of problems with some of the updates.

I want to delete the download, so that it will not be installed, when I reboot.

This is a W2K system. Where are the updates stored prior to being installed? I want to delete this update.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Linda Hewitt--What Teknophobia has said is probably correct. Before I got the full Office Suite, I had the Viewers. I used to frequently get updates from Windows Update for "Office" or its components.
In any event if you click on the + next to the update at the Windows Update site, it should tell you if you can uninstall the Update (from Control Panel|Add/Remove). (Just make note of the KB number so it is easy to find in the list under Windows.) So you have nothing to lose.
Per the site for the manual download of the Viewers themselves, it seems the update should be suitable for Win2K.

Where do Update downloads go? I am not sure--probably either Temp or Recent folders. Most downloads have the file name .enu. You could run a Search for .enu to see if you can spot it. But as mentioned, you really have nothing to lose by installing it.
How do you stop the nagging if you decide not to install? Again in Windows Update click on the + next to the Update to see Details. That should offer the opportunity to check a box saying something like "Do not offer this update again".
