Is this a virus?
About once a session my mouse becomes totally uncontrolable. The pointer races around the screen, programs and menus open and close at random, anything running when this begins gets closed and you cannot direct the pointer to any button. Crtl-Alt-Del is frozen, keyboard methods of duplicating mouse actions are disabled and all is accompanied by a chatter over the PC speaker. The only thing you can do is power off and restart but Scandisking which normally accompanies an incorrect shutdown is bypassed.
Any ideas or information will be appreciated.

What drugs are you on there Moke? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Joking aside it sure doesn't sound very good, I haven't heard of anything like that yet. If I do I'll certainly let you know.

EDIT - Maybe the last couple of paragraphs in the following link could help. http://www.computercraft.com/docs/muscdead.html
Did you try another mouse?

johnking - I currently have no AV program or firewall installed. I am three days into a fresh format and re-install of 98SE and have just a few basic standard programs installed - Eudora, Netscape, PhotoStudio, IE4 & Absolute FTP. I have no client installed in Network Components and a test probing from Shields Up
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2
shows my system impregnable to the probes they make. Prior to the format and re-install (not because of this problem) I had run several AV programs with the latest up dates and found zip. I have analyzed my boot up and have nothing but the bare bones items loading at start up - from any of the six loading spots.
The only download I've made is an updated audio drive from the manufacturer. I have not received any E's with any .exe, .com Etc. attachments and they would not have been opened at any rate.
Jo - Am off to buy a new mouse when I close and I think it may be the answer. My mouse is ten years old!
Thanks for the assistance guys,
Moke

Geeeeeeeeeeze, your mousy is almost as old as I am...
If you had Intell Mouse drivers install, it will do that on some machines, but yours is so honed, that I agree, time to enlarge the mouse hole and gets a new one.

Dodge - Thanks I'm still kicking. I had a week of daily crashing but finally put the blame on 98SE and now bow to it's quirks and am stable again I hope.
Also I have been building a high school alumni/reunion web page for my high school class and it is taking a lot of time - not building the page - getting our 300 + classmates to respond with information.
I replaced my mouse drivers including vmm32.vxd (nobody should replace vmm32.vxd unless they really know what they are doing or they will be OS reloading) and so far no problems even with the fossil mouse.
I neglected to post that the problem occurred both on and off line which is significant.
I will be replacing my mouse tomorrow providing that this time when I journey into town I remember to buy a replacement https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Thanks to all
