webstar modem - connecting via ethernet and USB

I have a Webstar cable internet modem. I currently have it connected to a D-Link wireless router via ethernet cable and that setup is working fine. I would now like to connect the cable modem to my desktop PC via USB cable - the Webstar modem has both ethernet and USB ports. I have downloaded and installed the USB drivers, configured the connection (automatic IP etc, disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP etc), however I am not getting connectivity to the desktop system. I've tried restarting everything.Any ideas?

That problem with usb does not surprise me. I give up on that some time ago.

May I suggest buying a router and it will also give you some protection from the internet.

Plus it will assign the ip numbers to the computers hooked up to it.

Even if you did get the usb part working, you probably will not be able to have both computers on the internet at the same time, unless you pay for a 2nd ip.

My problem is one of georgraphy, sort of. The modem is adjacent to my desktop system. From it (the modem) I've run a long ethernet cable out to another part of the house. That's where I've positioned the wireless router, because that's where we tend to use our laptops. Rather than running another cable from the router back to the desktop, I thought I could use the USB out on the modem directly to the desktop system. The modem documentation says that you can have separate computers plugged into the ethernet and USB ports. I hadnt considered the issue of my ISP assigning 2 IPs and wanting to charge me twice. I guess I should check with my ISP (Rogers) and see what they say.

Move the router back to the modem and Add a wireless repeater.
