[XP] seagate external HD
can i shutdown or restart the main computer
without 'dismounting' the external drive...
as long as i do not turn off the external drive ?
there is a problem... when i go to 'safely remove hardware'
it never will allow it. it is always 'busy'
and i have closed all files on it.
TIA

A proper shutdown of Windows includes flushing the disk buffers and closing out any open resources, so yes you can do this and not worry.

To add to that, many external drives turn on and off with the PC power. No need to do anything.

thanks
the seagate pushbutton backup/usb/firewire 200Gb
doesn't shut itself off, unfortunately. would be nice if it did.

How about putting it on a power strip with the computer?
Power down the computer as normal, then power off the power strip.
That should shut down both devices. Plus, you can put on the printer, monitor, etc.
A far better solution would be a UPS, which will protect you from power surges, brownouts, etc. Plus, it gives the advantages of the power strip.

I agree about the UPS. I plug all my external bits into it, external drive, router, gigabit switch, etc. and then just turn the UPS off at the end of the day. I like APC ones:
