Hello btcomm :)
That is a known problem and you have taken the correct steps.
However turning off Automatic Updates should not stop you getting Updates from the Updates Site.
What error message are you getting from the Updates Site?
Go to the "Windows Update Log" and look for any "Errors". This gives a clearer indication as to the exact nature of the problem. The newest entries are at the end of the log.
The windows update log is here
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log
Just run one of these scans too
Housecall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
ewido scan http://www.ewido.net/en/

I didn't just disable automatic updates in the control panel. I actually went into administrative tools, then services and disabled automatic update service there. When I went to the windows update site it said one of the following services is not running, automatic updates was one of the services listed.
Aha, that`s what the problem is then.
You should not have disabled the Service. You won`t get Updates without the Service running. You only need to turn off in Control Panel. Go turn the Service back to Automatic. You should get the Updates then. :)

I know this is kind of an old thread but, before I disabled the automatic update service under services I disabled automatic updates in the control panel and it did not stop that process from taking up the CPU.
What I did end up doing was a non destructive system restore from the restore partition and that ended up fixing it. It's really kind of annoying how often automatic updates gets screwed up in windows, I see it all the time and yet I still have not seen anywhere how to fix it without doing a repair on the OS.
You never said a truer word :(Quote:

I`m glad you got it fixed.
