More than likely the battery is shot. By the way, how old is that laptop?

A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.
There are several factors to take into consideration when determining if the time has come to replace your battery. This information may also apply to that new battery that you have recently purchased, that has been giving you fits. The two primary things to consider when troubleshooting battery problems is Usage Habits and Battery Memory

Thank you for a quick reply. My laptop is second hand which i bought about 6 months ago. I always use it in my room and it is connected to power. I don't understand how could the battery be the problem.
If the battery goes full dead, the laptop will not even begin to bootup.
Slap a new battery in it and it should be OK again.
Learned the hardway with a clients lapper. :(
It maybe over heating the cpu
yeah my inspiron 1150 wont even turn on...i just bought a new battery for it from japan off ebay...at first it booted up fine, then i turned it off and now it wont turn on...the light just turns steady yellow for a minute then turns off...anyone knows anything?
u may have already tried this but....have u tried charging it..i mean actually plugging it in...also try buying a battery directly from Dell...u may have got a battery that was past its life expectency.
wow...so someone off ebay might of sold me a dead battery?
You have to be very careful about buying computer bits from Ebay. Unfortunately there are vast amounts of fakes and rejects being sold
i just got done talking to the guy i bought the battery from on ebay and the difference in the batteries are:
The battery he sent me is 14.8V- 6450mAH, Capacity 96WH.
The original battery is 14:8V- 4300mAH, Capacity 65WH.
Do the 65WH and 96WH make a difference?
Yes, the new battery has a higther capacity, and should therefore last longer - it should last half as long again as the original in fact. But if it won't charge up then it doesn't really matter how much capacity the new battery has.
Did the old batttery definitely charge up OK?
not any more it wont charge up no more...
In that case there may never have been a problem with the old battery, it could be that the fault is in the charging circuit :( Do you have a multimeter that you can test the AC adapter with?
