[RESOLVED] Problem creating PDFs with Acrobat ver 6 -- Help

Today, I was not able to create a PDF using Acrobat version 6. Because of the malware vulnerabilities for Acrobat Reader version 6, I installed FoxIt as my new reader. This may or may not be the reason why I cannot create PDFs now. I am also getting a couple of error messages, which I have also attached.

This is on a W2K system with 512 MB RAM.

Thanks for the link. I went to that site and obviously, there are problems but I don't have a clue as to what is causing my problem or anyone else's problems.

I performed the Acrobat "detect and repair" function, so I am not getting the two api failure to initialize error message any more. However, I still can not create a PDF.

I decided to do a search on both plug-in api files that Acrobat said it was able to initialize.

Well, here is what I found:

HTML2PDF.api size 1,561 KB installed May 2003

HTML2PDF.api BAK size 1,581 KB installed December 2004

PPKLite.api size 1,933 November 2003

PPKLite.api BAK size 1,933 November 2003

PPKLite had the exact same date and time for both the original and the BAK files.

Does that mean that my problem is with the HTML2PDF.api plug-in?

Linda, that seems to be a logical conclusion. I would rename the current HTML2PDF.api and restore the .bak file.
Note: this may break FoxIt.

So far everything that I have tried has only made the problem worse. I renamed the HTML2PDF.api to HTML2PDFbad.api but it didn't work.

I received two pdf files that I tried to read. I couldn't read these files in Acrobat, FoxIT or PDF995.

All suggestions greatly appreciated.

Have you done an Acrobat update?

I have read that Adobe is not making any more updates to Acrobat 6.x and I have installed the latest update, which is 6.0.6.

I just checked the Adobe site and the latest update is 6.0.6.

I know on my Acrobat 6 (also =on W2k), one of the updates were more trouble than they were worth.

At this point I would suggest you bite the bullet and uninstall Acrobat6, run a registry cleanup and reinstall Acrobat 6.

That may be what I end up having to do but it would be a very complicated task.

When I bought version 6 upgrade, it was for a new computer, so I had to call Adobe to detailed instructions as to what to do. Then I would have to download 6 patches from Adobe.

How would I go about doing a registry search and edit? What all would I need to search for? How do I get rid of FoxIT, when it is not listed in my programs or in the add/remove programs area?

I have already uninstalled PDF995.

I am wondering if doing a registry edit might solve my problem without doing an uninstall and re-install of Acrobat?

The bottom line is that I think that I prefer to take my chances Acrobat reader 6 vulnerabilities than the mess that I am now forced to deal with.

This is the pits.

I open to any suggestions that anyone may have.

If I do the re-install process, then I am going to have to call Adobe and they are not going to be available until Monday. So we have this weekend to explore other possibilities.

Linda, can you just confirm how you are attempting to create the PDF file from the start. Is it all done in Adobe or are you trying to convert from within an existing document (Word or web page etc).

I have a Word document that I wanted to save as a PDF.

I do not use PDFs that often but the "save as PDF" toolbar used to be in Word and other applications. That toolbar was not available.

So, I saved and closed the Word document.

1. opened Acrobat 6.0.6
2. clicked on Create PDF
3. select from file
4. Open dialog box is displayed
5. Select file
6. Verify that file type is Microsoft Office (*.doc, etc.)
7. Settings are set at standard and no security
8. Click "Open"
9. Then I get the 10 second progress bar, followed by the document for 10 seconds and then an empty grey area where the PDF should be displayed.

When I had the Acrobat toolbar, I do not remember needing to do do settings. I would be in Word, I would click the Acrobat icon for create a PDF and the PDF would be created.

UPDATE:

I went looking for the PDF icons in Word. I'm not sure what I did, but I found them and it is now a menu item in Word. I clicked convert to PDF and it worked without a problem.

So for now the problem is solved.

Great news. That's about the only way I ever used my Acrobat writer (from Office toolbar).
My version is still at 6.03 so I wouldn't be able to accurately replicate your main program issue.
