cannot delete "corrupted" files

i just purchased a maxtor one touch external drive for backup purposes.

rather than use their software, i decided to just drag and drop my files onto it.

everything went well.

i went to look at some of the files on the external drive to make sure everything was okay. but i discovered that a few files and a few folders were NOT okay. they could not be opened nor deleted. giving me the error "the file or directory is corruptible and unreadable".

i want to return this item but would like to remove these files before i do. i have tried using UNLOCKER and MOVEONBOOT. but neither one is able to help me remove these files and folders.

i guess i COULD reformat the drive but that would remove the software that came with it. i don't think the store would appreciate my returning a drive with it's software missing.

any advice?

You may have had the files open when you disconnected the drive, or you moved mutiple large files in one drag and drop.

Not all of the files can be repaired, but some of them may be.

Open my computer

Right click on the external drive.

Select properties

Select the tools tab

Under error checking select check now

In the dialog box select, fix errors, repair bad sectors.

If you get a dialog box that says cant run, window is using run at next reboot.

You may have system restore monitoring the drive, or some other process. Check SR if it on turn it off and try again.

Check disk will not run on my USB connected drive on a reboot.

This may fix your file problems.

If you must format it, copy the software to your computer, format the drive, put the software back.

Remeber that formating does not remove your data, it only removes the reference to the datas location from the master file table.

Did you run a scandisk? I'm wondering if a sector or sectors of your new drive is/are defective, and the files didn't write properly, in which case, yes, you would have trouble deleting them. A scandisk can flag bad sectors as "bad" so that the system will not attempt to write to them.

Windows XP, Vista: Error checking

well, i've run scan disk.. no problems.

tried safe mode.. but can't delete corruptible files there (i posted a reply on this.. but it seems to have disappeared).

i also ran a full format and moved the files using the windows copy command. did the same using SyncBack software. did the same using the Maxtor 1-Touch software. in all three instances, most files are okay. some are corrupted. tho not necessarily the same ones. in addition, some DOC files are just full of unprintable characters.

i looked at seagate (since there is no maxtor) site.. could not find any information.

i've spent a week on this already .. time to take it back.

thanks guys ... for all your help. this is a mystery to me. i already have an 320 gig drive in another external USB case. it works fine. never any problems. go figure.
