Acrobat 6 Reader Malware Issue -- What to do???

I have Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.x and Adobe Acrobat Professional, version 6.x.

The advice that I have read online is to upgrade reader to version 8.0 but are there any problems in terms of my continuing to use Acrobat Pro version 6.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I discovered this issue by running Ad-Aware, when it identified a critical object named MRU List Object, Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0. Using Ad-Aware, I deleted this object.

I've given up on adobe reader completely. It's a bloated, lingering pain in the butt. I now use foxit reader instead of Adobe reader 8 which drove me crazy..

It does everything I need it to as an adobe reader replacement, is smaller, faster and never causes shutdown problems by staying in memory even after it's closed like adobe does.

Having said that I still use adobe reader ver 6 in my laptop with no problems and have found no issues accessing any documents online or any pdf file. Fewer features but I could care less.

Adobe are no longer offering updates for Acrobat 6, so the security situation there is only going to get worse over time. Installing Adobe Reader 8 and making sure your browser uses that by default should mostly shield you, but if you open a dodgy PDF file in Acrobat 6 for some reason you can still get compromised.

I don't believe that foxit reader is vulnerable to any exploits that adobe reader is. I guess I'll change my ver 6 to foxit now too though.

I am in the process of downloading FoxIt 2.0, then I will uninstall Acrobat Reader 6.0.

Thanks for pointing that out, yes they've changed the address recently. I'll fix that.

MRU=Most Recently Used

So that critical MRU list is simply the list of the last files opened in Acrobat..

In other words when you open Acrobat and go to File .. the list at the bottom of the last 8 or so documents opened is what is being found by Adaware.

Adobe has 3 sets of Reader versions out. Version 6 for Win 9X/ME and versions 7 and 8 for newer OS's.

When fully updated, version 6 is 6.05 and 7 is 7.09 (don't know 8's current build number, sorry!) 7.09 is supposedly up-to-date. 6.05 is probably a different story though. The update to 6.05 was almost a year ago...

I had been using version 6.05. When I went to uninstall the reader 6.05, I discovered that I couldn't do that easily because there is NOT a separate listing for the reader. The version 6 professional edition and reader are combined together. This is what made me decide to download FoxIT.

I don't use Acrobat enough to justify the money to upgrade to version 8. When I upgraded to version 6, it cost me $150+tax.

Does anyone know whether or no FoxIt create problems in terms of being able to create PDFs using Acrobat 6?

I am running Foxit and Adobe Acrobat 6.x I have no problem opening pdfs in Foxit or in creating pdf files with Adobe. I have Foxit associated with pdf in Windows and when I do convert a another type of file to pdf, Adobe starts up no problem.

It is nice to know that this works for someone. But it is still not working for me.

I did the "Detect and Repair" operation on Acrobat and then tried to create a PDF. No error messages, I click on create a PDF, select the file, the programs churns for maybe 30 seconds, then I see the PDF window but it is empty.

Here is what I show as the last Acrobat update, which is 6.0.6.

This is really baffling.

I decided to do a search on both api files that it Acrobat said it was able to initialize.

Well, here is what I found:

HTML2PDF.api size 1,561 KB installed May 2003

HTML2PDF.api BAK size 1,581 KB installed December 2004

PPKLite.api size 1,933 November 2003

PPKLite.api BAK size 1,933 November 2003

PPKLite had the exact same date and time for both the original and the BAK files.

Does that mean that my problem is with the HTML2PDF.api plug-in?

When I had the problem with HTML2PDF.api I eventually got around it. I had the original Adobe 6.0 disk which I put in my C Drive again and it gave me three options. "Modify", Repair" or "Remove" I asked it to "Repair" and it went through a process of fixing any broken files and that was all it needed. I was able to load up the Reader and print the document that I couldn't print before! Job done.
