[RESOLVED] Router going "belly up?"

Hi folks,

I have a Linksys router that I bought back in about 1998. It has worked flawlessly until recently. I've built a new box that's loaded with a fresh install of XP Pro. When I boot the new machine up, some of the time, there is no Internet connection. (Looking at the front plate of the router will then confirm that there is no connection on that machine.) A reset of the router will fix things. I realize this isn't much to go on, but from what I've said, does this sound like the router is sporadically failing, or is this more likely a problem with XP? Thanks!

It could be a failing port on the router did you try it in a different one Limerick.You could also try swapping out the cable and see if reception improves.

Time to get a new one Limerick.
Anyway how I fixed that problem twice now.
And be aware , that with the new one turned on, you just may need to power cycle the modem. I did.

Many thanks for the replies! I've just now finished inserting a different cable into a previously unused port. I've rebooted several times, and it hasn't failed to connect yet. I'll give it a few days and see how it goes. If It fails to connect again, I'll simply scrap this old router and pursue the procurement of a new one...

I've had Linksys router ports go bad on me before. That's most likely what it is.

This is the only router that I've ever had, and this has been the first time that I've seen connectivity issues like this. However, I've now done several cold boots and a number of warm reboots, and each time it boots up properly connected. I *think* this has fixed it, but I'll come back to the thread in a few days and report any additional findings... Thanks again!

Though I would not have thought of a router port "going bad", that indeed seems to be the case with the one that I have. Switching the connection to another port has banished the sporadic connection problem that I initially posted about. I've booted the machine a number of times now, and it has not missed connecting at all. I'm happy, and am glad that I posted here for the help that I got. :D

To be honest I'm a bit skeptical. Mine would be sporadic.. You get it on a good day and it would work. Then it would stop working again. I eventually gave up on it.
