Able to receive faxes, but not send, using Winfax

I am using XP and winfax pro 10.02. Recently added a new sound card and de-activated the sound card which came with my Dell Dimension E510. Do not know if that last fact is relevant, but did not have the faxing problem before the new sound card was connected.

I am able to receive faxes, but not able to send. When I click on send, to send a fax, I get an error message that there is no carrier. Clearly, there is a carrier, because I can receive faxes. What could possibly be wrong?

I am considering removing the new sound card.
I am considering uninstalling and re-installing Winfax.

Does anyone have an idea?

I cannot find the exact specs for your machine's sound and modem card but on some OEM systems the sound and modem are located on the same card. If this is the case with your system the modem will not work correctly with the sound disabled because they may share the same driver software. On my HP Pav with this setup I wanted to improve the modem as we were on dialup at the time. I had to add a new modem and a new sound card in order to have sound with the new modem installed as the combo card (modem/sound) would not work if it was partially disabled. My guess is the same thing is happening here. You may need to install a new modem card separately to regain full FAX functionality. Reinstalling WinFax would be worth a try as it is still probably associated with the previous FAX/modem driver. May fix you up. But, if it is indeed a combo card you may have to add a new modem in addition to your sound.

Your idea makes sense. I am going to remove the new sound card and resume using the old card. If that corrects the problem with the faxing, I will post back and let you know. Thanks much.

Post back: Did two things simultaneously. Therefore not sure which corrected the problem. Removed the new sound card. Problem persisted. Re-installed Winfax. Problem resolved. All is now well. Thanks for your help.
