To do or not to do...
Hi friends,
I've been running Windows XP since back when I was on the beta test team for it. I've really enjoyed using it, and have had very few times where I've been forced to reboot. (Unlike Win 98, which often required it daily, as you know.)
Here's the deal -- I slapped together a new computer a few weeks ago and I'm currently running Windows Vista (RC2) on it. This is a very cool OS and I suspect that Microsoft is going to make TONS of moola from it when it comes bolting out of the chute in the very near future. I've thought for awhile that I would also be one of the early adopters, and buy a copy of Vista for this new machine. But I got to thinking... why not do the following?
1) Uninstall XP Pro from the machine that used to be my Primary computer,
2) Install that retail copy of XP on this new computer,
3) Install Win2K on the now Secondary machine (which will be used infrequently),
4) Wait a year or so before jumping over into the Vista camp? That
would give Vista some time to mature, with a Service Pack or so under its
belt by that time.
So what say ye, o gurus of the realm of operating systems and all things zero and one? I'd like to hear your thoughts as to what you would do in this situation. Thanks, amigos! (Yes, I know there are lots of other possibilities, but I'm only interested in whether I should do as above, or go with the full-blown Vista in January, keeping XP on the machine that it's on...)

I think that is exactly what I would do. Indeed it is pretty much exactly what I did when WinXP came out, though I actually ended up buying XP earlier than I had originally planned to because of a very nice offer that MS did a few weeks after XP was released. Look out for those offers, there often seem to be some early on - I got 33% off XP Pro.

Hi Nick,
I'm a bit surprised that you seem to be the only one with an opinon as to my best course of action. Even so, I appreciate your reply. I'll be keeping my eyes open for a deep discount on Vista once it's out there in the marketplace...

Hello Limerick,
Here`s another opinion for you. :)
I`m interested in Vista too and have just bought a new machine capable of running it to full advantage.
However I`m not going to buy it when it first comes out for the reasons you stated. Hopefully I won`t have to wait as long as a year, but I`ll be keeping watch until I think any glitches have been ironed out.
If there are any problems with Vista I`m sure we will hear about them pretty soon, so you will just have to weigh them up against any special offers from MS

Despite all the activity on M$'s part to goof-proof Vista, I think it's inevitable that there will be teething problems when it hits the market. I'm waiting for the initial price to come down, as well as for the bugs to be fixed.

I only just started usng XP at home so no need to jump straight onto vista for me.
The big bummer for me, is that new deal they announced for purchses from 26th October where people would be eligible for a cheaper vista upgrade.
My Dell order went through on the 24th October so I just missed out.
