XP License

Hiya folks.... :cool:

I am a little confused on the XP EULA.....particularly what I am permitted to do with my Home Edition copy.

Recently.....I had to reinstall Windows because of serious corruption. After the reinstall....I got the validation thingy pop-up, which I did. Microsoft apparently saw that it was the same hardware environment and simply re-validated with no muss or fuss. So far so good....

Now, however....I want to do something else....

I want to build a new machine from scratch....but I don't want to buy another operating system. So....I want to wipe out the install on this machine...build the new one....and install this copy on that new one.

First...is it legal?

Second...what is going to happen when I go to validate with an entirely new hardware environment?

Third...what do I need to do if validation should fail?

It would depend on the form of licence you have is it OEM [non tranferable] or Full?
As to validating it if it is a full licence then you would follow the same procedure as before.I did read somewhere that their server holds the validations for around 120days or so but this may be another MS myth.
If it fails auto validate and suggested ringing MS for the validation then explain the the MS operator that you have tranfered it to a new system and all should be hunky dorry.

The 120 days is not a myth, after that time you can validate over the Internet in the normal way. Before that period is up you just have to phone MS and explain what you are doing - they won't give you a hard time about it.

that is, as 104456 said, dependent on WinXP being a retail copy and not OEM though.

I don't think this qualifies as OEM....but it isn't retail either....

It's through the "Microsoft Store" that an MVP got for me at discounted price. Other than a sticker on the box saying Microsoft Store....it appears just like any other boxed full version in the stores.

So other than how much I paid....it's a legit boxed version....as near as I can figure.

Anyone see a problem with this version?

Forgive if I am wrong....but I detect a certain saracasm in your post. Are you suggesting my copy is illegal?

The copies that are from the MS company store are normal retail versions, there is nothing special about them at all.

BTW....in case anyone has been given the WRONG idea about this....

The boxed version I received was still sealed and MS accepted the validation without question. It was paid for and it is not running anywhere else but on this machine...

I shouldn't have to make that clear.....but I will anyway.....

Interesting question, Maxxmillian, and one that has been bugging me. I have only the recovery disk for my XP, but I hoped that the drive image I made with Acronis would serve to put back the OS and all other installed software on another machine if my laptop died, or if I had to reinstall on the same machine. Please forgive my ignorance, folks, but what is "MVP"?

With the recovery disc....it isn't even a matter of legality...it just plain won't work on any other machine, I believe. And my guess is that any drive image made from an OEM operating system likely will not work either. It most certainly would violate the EULA even if it did work. Those OEM systems state pretty clearly they are only to be used on that particular machine I think....

I think I have OEM figured out....you can't do anything except reinstall on the same device (hence the use of the word "Recovery" disc. I wasn't sure how the version I have would go, though.

Others know more....but my guess is that if your laptop died....your license dies with it. Like the captain going down with the ship.....

The MVP we are talking about is Microsoft Most Valuable Professional...like in SuperSparks' signature....

No bud i'm not trying to be sarcastic , I'm just saying if you got it from a MVP person couldn't you just ask this person whether if its an oem or retail version , This person would know for sure but from what I can see from others who has posted afterwards you would have a retail version and to answer your question you can transfer this version onto a new computer prior you remove it off from your older computer ...

I had just been reading a thread at another site where some poor guy was being accused of running pirate windows simply because he did not have SP2. I suppose the mods/admins, there, feel that they can accuse anyone of piracy that they like....just because they won't take SP2.

I had SP2...it wrecked me...and won't do it again.... ;)

At any rate....I guess it put me on edge reading that other thread. I should have remembered this forum is a cut above that one. :D

As for the MVP guy......I figured it would be faster and easier to just post here than send of an email and wait for a reply. There's always someone hanging around here...

Not quite its the same hardware i.e. if the motherboard dies and is replaced you licence technically needs renewing as it dies with the board.The recovery disk is OEM and sometimes its a disk sometimes on a hidden partition [somtimes you have to pay extra to get a recovery disk].A note on this is if your drive dies and its a hidden partition then youve not only lost your recovery partition but your licence too.

As to the SP2 issue you can simplify the process by making a slipstreamed XP CD with SP2 intergrated for your reinstall.You could take it a step further and intergrate all the patches to date if your up to downloading them all individually.

For clarification, Maxx, a solid majority of installs that lack SP2 are pirated versions. They may not realize it (they got the OS from an unethical shop, or whatever) or, in some cases, the owner knows it and is looking for a workaround to obtain the updates. It has nothing to do with accusing anyone of anything.

The other thing to point out in all fairness is that when SP2 causes problems it's almost always due to being installed on a system with malware present. Again, no accusations or casting aspersions, it's just fact.
