Open File Security Warning

I searched for an answer for this....but couldn't find one. Can't imagine that I am the only person needing this since it is SO annoying.... :D

I need to shut off the stupid warning dialog box that states "Open File Security Warning" that XP SP2 has gratiously dropped into my lap. This occurs only when I recieve email images and save them to another folder. When I try to open them...I get this warning and have to agree to. Like this:

This happens even with unzipped photos that arrived compressed. I read about attachment handlers in SP2 and such....and how they brand each file with this warning until I shut it off for each one.... but can't find the hack or fix to shut down this handler completely.

Is there a reg hack or something?

Hi Maxx, if you use OE, open the program & click tools options, security tab, if there is a check in the box next to do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus, uncheck it & click apply. BJ

Train....I ran into that page already, but it doesn't seem to apply to saved email photos.....

BJ....I don't have that setting checked. I removed that check when OE started censoring my email awhile back. Damn I hate all this automatic security stuff from MS these days.

To add to BJ's advice--if you use IE, do that in OE anyway. OE & IE share settings, but those in OE override the others. (This also explains why getting rid of Windows Messenger can be such a pain.)

Can't seem to find a setting in IE or OE that applies to this annoyance....

It's been doing it since I upgraded to SP2 and if it is only 1 or 2 pics....it wasn't too bad. But when I get a zip package with a whole bunch of pics that have to be individually "cleared" after unzipping....it's a PITA.

There are more SP2 annoyances I want to get rid of too...but one thing at a time. ;)

OK...making some progress I think....

Found out that this can be fixed in a couple ways.....but basically it involves shutting down zone checking. Now Microsoft advises against using this method on a permanent basis for a system environtmental variable....which means it is probably the correct fix and MS won't admit the mistake in the first place....

However....the poster asks whether disabling zone checking would affect his IE website settings for zones....and I don't think he really got an answer. I am asking the same question. If I disable zone checking.....does IE also lose the ability to distinguish between trusted and restricted sites? :confused:

EDIT: Reread and it appears one poster says it will not effect IE zone settings. Anybody disagree or agree with that assessment? I do not want to lose my IE zone settings.....

OOPS....maybe posted a question here too soon....a bit more searching and I found another workaround. Gonna post for others that have this problem....

When you get a zip file in email....after you save it, but before you unzip it....do this:

Right-click
Properties
Click "unblock" button
Apply

Then when you unzipo....the individual files won't carry the security tag.

This all applies to WinXP SP2
