Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".
===============
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:
folders...
C:\Program Files\Need2Find
c:\program files\altnet
C:\PROGRA~1\RXTOOL~1
-
Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
-
Reboot.
===============
To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:
Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:
1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.
-
Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.
===============
After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.
-
Okay, I have followed the Hijack This directions, deleted folders listed (one did not exist - C:\PROGRA~1\RXTOOL~1), and installed Spyware Blaster. When enabling all protection, it will not enable everything. Each time I try, there are a number of items that will not remain enabled.
I then downloaded AdAware and latest defs, Spybot and latest defs, and ewido anti-spyware and latest defs onto CD. I then installed them all on this infected PC and applied the latest definitions from the downloaded CD. I did it this way because the PC allows Internet access for a short period of time and then it stops allowing activity - web page error displays. I was able to get short period of access after following Hijack This directions - and then I would be back to no Internet access. I did run each of these and had them remove what they found.
I see in the log listed below that it references AVG and ewido anti-spyware. However, the computer does not show icons for these running in the task bar.
Here is the latest Hijack This log...

Here is a new log. I see the items that I have checked keep returning. Any ideas why?
I tried enabling all protections again through Spyware Blaster. Still same results, where some items are not being allowed to be enabled.
As far as Internet connection goes, it appears to be working properly, but it is still early. Hopefully, it continues in this manner. Oops, spoke too soon - Internet issues are back where IE page cannot be displayed error showing up again.
Also, this computer does not shutdown properly. Everytime shutdown is selected, the computer reboots. It does display a message that it is okay to shutdown the computer safely now. However, upon pressing the power button to complete the shutdown, it reboots.

If you are definitely shutting down each and every instance of Internet Explorer before fixing with hijackthis, then it is a safe bet that Ewido is preventing the fix. Please shut down Ewido completely with the icon in the system tray, check in task manager to make sure that it is indeed stopped, then scan with hijackthis again and fix these entries;

Not sure why spywareblaster is doing that. You may have to try uninstalling it, then redownload the file again and try installing it again.
As for the shutdown problem, I'll see what I can find out for you :).

In the system tray, not much is appearing. For instance AVG does not show there, Ewido does not show there, Zone Alarm does not show there, etc.
When I attempt to shutdown processes through task manager, I get access denied errors.
I recently attempted to install spysweeper, but ran into an access is denied error for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Webroot\Spysweeper - RegCreateKeyEx failed; code 5 .... abort, retry, ignore. I ran into a similar situation when trying to re-install Spyware Blaster.
Still having issues with Internet access - works temporarily after a restart and then it moves to everything coming up with page cannot display errors.
I did another Hijack This scan and fix of items currently listed, rebooted and ran a new scan. The items were still there. So, the log file looks pretty much like the previous one, so I'm not posting anything at this time. There is something odd happening, but I can't seem to track done the solution yet. Thanks for any help in advance.
Oh, and the shutdown issue still exists.
Thanks,
Jody

I am certain that W2K can be shut down the same way as XP, by just going through the Start>Turn off Computer process. I just cannot remember how to get the option :(.
Have you trid removing those entries in safe mode at all? If not, please do so.
Go here and download then run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log. Please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

I believe this computer was an upgrade to Windows 2000, thus it displays the message it is okay to shutdown your machine upon shutdown. However after the message displays and pressing the power button, the machine recycles and begins booting again. Not sure what is going on to cause this issue. Maybe there is a Windows patch that will resolve this that has not been applied to this machine.
In relation to the Hijack This removal of the R0, R3, and O15 items noted above, I have had no luck removing them in normal mode or in safe mode. Hijack This indicates the items are removed or fixed, but when you rescan, they remain as items in the list.
I have downloaded the Silent Runners vbs script and attempted to run it. However, I am getting access denied errors. I'm not sure what is blocking it, but as I continue to work on this machine I am running into a lot of access is denied errors. I attempted to check settings through control panel and received access is denied errors there too. I am logged in with an admin account, but it does not appear that the account is acting as an admin account. Maybe once the access is denied portion is corrected, the rest of the issues will be able to be resolved. Any ideas on how to address these issues?
Your help is greatly appreciated! This forum is the best I have dealt with.

Am seeking help from someone more knowledgeable than I. Hang loose :D.
-
OK. Is the account you are running from the only one that is set up? If so, can you go to the Control Panel | Users and set up a user-level account. Reboot and see what happens when you attempt any of the stuff from previous posts.
If you still have no luck, put the W2K CD in and then go to Start|Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit the OK button. See how it goes after that. Do not omit the space between the sfc and the / switch.
Let us know.

I did end up creating a new admin account and was able to get by the issues that I was encountering with Hijack This, Spware Blaster, etc. The only issue that I know remains is the shutdown issue, but that is just going to be worked with as a known issue and no more time will be spent on trying to resolve it. Thanks for all you assistance!

Ok. No worries. Sorry I couldn't help further.
