joystick problems
hi,
have been using my trusty joystick i got free with my first computer now for a long time, about 8 years!!, with no problems until now. i had not got around to using it since i almost completely upgraded my PC some months ago but now i need it and it's not working. i would normally plug it in and go to control panel, game controllers, and add it manually. but now when i do that i get a message saying;
'your gameport or gameport drivers are not properly configured. please consult the device manager.'
device manager seems to give me no help either. any idea's people?

Try reinstallinmg the motherboard chipset drivers, and the sound drivers if you are using onboard sound.

well i think you may be on to something there. i remember now that i had to do a clean install of windows a bit back and when i did i could not find the mobo installation Cd to install all the drivers etc. but it turned out that everything seemed to work fine without it, apart from the sound which i got of the asus site. so surprise, surprise it's come back to bite me in the butt. Only problem is i still can't find my CD so i need to get them on the asus site. but when i enter all my details it gives me a list of downloadable software like this;
AUDIO
BIOS
BIOS-Utilities
LAN
Manual
RAID
Utilities
Others
And I don’t know what the relevant download is?
:confused:

Audio is the one I would try first, because the joystick port often doubles up as a MIDI port and so is often handled by the audio driver. If you need the chipset drivers (you'd probably have yellow splats in DM if you do), I think they'll be under "Others".
-
well the audio drivers are the one things i have installed of the asus site. the mobo came with a wire that you could connect to the mobo and had the standard controller/joystick connection on it. but i have an adapter that changes it from that to USB that i am using. also i have plenty of yellow splats in DM under "others". they are; Ethernet controller and 2 mass storage controller, but that’s it.

OK try the chipset drivers, they are listed under "Others", I just checked.

well i managed ti find my mobo CD and installed all that stuff, then i installed the chipset drivers of the site just to be sure. still no luck. only other thing i can think is that it's something to do with the fact i am using USB and not the normal game connection.

Yes, that could well be what the problem is. It's probably time to get a proper USB joystick.

well it was that time a long time ago! but as long as it worked what more did i need. it might have a saving grace though. i will plug in the controller port cable that came with my mobo and see if that works.
