LapLink's PC Mover program questions

A long time ago, I used to use LapLink a lot but this was in the DOS days. Laplink always came with the program and the appropriate cables.

I just got an email from Laplink about their PC Mover program, which they claiim can trasfer settings, programs and documents to a new computer.

I have always been told that you needed to reinstall all of your programs. I don't have a clue as to how PC Mover or any other program could correctly set the registry on a user's new computer.

Has anyone used PC Mover and does it work successfully as Laplink is advertising it? Or is this just out-of-date technology.

Laplink is advertising PCMover for $39.95 plus $19.95 for a USB 1.1 or 2.0 cable.

Have you seen any published reviews on PC Mover?

Thanks. It is as I suspected. This is just another company that is in its death throes, even though it was an excellent company 10-15 years ago.

I have decided to pass on this product and do things the old fashioned way of installing the programs.

I work for Laplink Software and wanted to address some of the comments posted here. PCmover does move programs from an old PC to a new one, and it is the only product on the market capable of doing this.

The two negative reviews posted to Amazon both mention a cable driver issue that was resolved quite some time ago. With PCmover, you can now simply plug the cable into the old and new computers, and they will “find” each other automatically.

I hope you won’t let a few outdated negative reviews prevent you from trying PCmover yourself. It truly is the easiest way to move everything from an old PC to a new one.

Doesn't AlohaBob PC Relocator Ultra do the same thing?

Do you know (or know where I can find out) if PCmover will move programs from a PC that is running on Windows 2000 Server? I can't seem to find this information on their website.

PC Mover is a complete waste of time and money! I knew going in that it would likely take 5 or so hours for the file transfer. What I didn’t realize is that it doesn’t move non MS items like Quick Books at all. It would have been far faster for me to re-install my software programs manually then to use PC Mover. I keep all my files backed-up anyway so PC Mover really didn’t help in that area either.

You do realize this thread is two (2) years old, right? And most of us use Acronis True Image now.

FWIW, I just tried PC Mover a few weeks ago because I was trying to be lazy and avoid re-installing everything on a PC at work. It would not work (even though the PCs saw each other) and was a complete waste of time. TRASH!!!
