Get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. That'll replace any missing or corrupt system files.
I ran sfc /scannow without any success. It would run for awhile then stop and ask me to load the XP CD that was already loaded. I would push retry and it would start again. This happened several times before it finished... Didn't help... :(Quote:

However this might work for you:
Open Explorer > go to Tools > Folder Options.
Under the View tab, click to check "Show hidden files and folders", and
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files", click Ok.
Next go to c:\windows\inf and find sr.inf.
Rightclick sr.inf and select install.
Maybe easier go to Start > run type:
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"
(without quotes, case sensitive)
It will ask you for sr.sys point to c:\windows\system32\drivers
srclient.dll - c:\windows\system32
Filelist.xml - c:\windows\system32\restore
rstrui.exe - c:\windows\system32\restore
srframe.mmf - c:\windows\system32\restore
I hope this helps
Yes, I think XOR has hit the nail on the head why the System File Checker isn't working. The only way of getting it to work is to slipstream SP2 into Windows. Here's how:
Creating a slipstreamed CD
Slipstreaming WinXP with SP2
Installing WinXP & SP2 with one CD
