Build a Laptop?

Okay, I have built numerous desktop computers, and feel very confident in my skills in that area. I know that, for the money, I can build a quality machine that any retailer would charge thousands.

Now I want to build a laptop, but I don't know where to start. Newegg and similar sites have all kinds of hardware for desktops, and you can typically find laptop memory and ROM drives, but where do you find all the other hardware (cases, mobo, processor, etc)?

Is this possible, or is it best to just buy a brand name machine?

I have seen barebone laptops at times, but never have found parts you can assemble to make one.

Believe me, a bunch of us tried.

Guess there is not enough business because of the few of us to make it worth their while to make those items available.

PLus there definately is a heat problem that has to be overcome on all lapper. Which I think is the guiding factor.

I figured if anyone would know about building your own laptop, it would be the people on VDr.

Thanks Train. I was really looking forward to building some custom laptops for friends/family. Guess I will wait a few years until it becomes an option!

Not only is it like Train said, but also motherboards for laptops are quite expensive. Last one I priced was over $500. By the time you add processor, video card and case with screen and memory, you could build one heck of desktop. :D

By the way, as I failed to bring this up earlier, those barebones actually were more expensive than the ones in the stores are. $1200 will get a real good laptop. Instead of pieces to put together plus having to buy more yet.

Most of the White box laptops that I have seen and order for customers are just a Asus laptop with a AOpen motherboard with some bits that you can include into it (graphics card, gigabit ethernet port, bluetooth ect). Other then that thats it. It's just to expensive and not worth it.
