ActiveX not active

Hiya peeps,

recently came across a problem with any site using activex controls....for some reason one of my computers will no longer access any sites that need activex ....for example any gaming sites. I have changed all the security settings to those recommended by the sites .... followed every instruction on deleting damaged file classes .... and even formatted and installed a different operating system .... it still won't work :mad:

A couple of the sites in question are;

all is well until I try to access the games room when the files needed should be downloaded.

I use free zone alarm and AVG free edition anti-virus .... although I have tried to access the rooms with both of these disabled to no avail.

the system in question is now running winME, ie6 sp1 and tools.

I have set every activex to it's lowest level of security but it still does not appear to allow any control at all.

What can be causing this?

While this might be a problem with my settings, I know that my NIS causes problems with any of the games from MSN. The only way I have managed to get MSN games to even open is to disable NIS for a minute then open the game. By the time the game has finished loading, NIS kicks back in.

I have tried getting there with absolutely no security, no firewall and no anti-virus and still no joy .... something has changed very recently with activex controls and a system that hasn't already got the appropriate controls installed cannot gain access to them. I know that some problems arose with XP with an update (Microsoft Security Advisory (912945)) that messed up activex (something to do with the Eolas stuff) for some people but I haven't a clue how to sort out the problem with win98 or winME. I have since discovered on a different computer running win98 that it will not download a new component/plug in needed to access a similar site, although it will still access sites with the controls already installed.

I am totally baffled now ... I just can't think of a work round for this.

p.s. I tried accessing through firefox ... unfortunately the msn game zone only allows internet explorer 5 or higher access to the multiplayer games, although I have been able to get access to some other game sites this way.

Virtual Patient--Try putting the URL's of the sites into Trusted Sites. (Uncheck the box "Require Server Verification...")

Thanks for the reply Jim, I've already tried that and it didn't work. But I still tried again and still no joy.

Virtual Patient--Perhaps try one more time, but this time when you are on the Security tab window and have highlighted Trusted Sites, click Restore Defaults, before clicking Sites to enter the Trusted Sites and entering the sites's URL.
I was able to enter the sites you posted fine once I had put them into Trusted Sites.

You could also try a Repair of IE, though I am not sure if that is available in WinME. Start|Run|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|System Information|Tools tab.

Hiya WelshJim, yes I did get those sites added into the trusted zone....that wasn't a problem ... but the activex or scripting still stopped access to the games, the necessary controls were still not downloading :(

Not sure about the internet explorer repair tool in ME but that didn't work when I tried in on win98, I'll try that again.

The purpose of clicking Restore Defaults is to set all the necessary Security settings in Trusted Sites at Allow in case something had altered that. Nothing to do with being able to enter the site into Trusted Sites.
If the problem continues, what error messages are you getting? (Try to post the exact message.) How do you know the problem is ActiveX?

Do you mean you actually cannot access the site, or that you cannot access the ActiveX content? I was able to access the msn cribbage site even when I had ActiveX blocked. But I could not install the program until I put the site into Trusted Sites. (I was also able to access the other site, but I did not try to play.)
Inability to access the site means something is blocking it. Could be a HOSTS file.
