Need for Speed can't detect sound card.

I'm trying to load an older game, "Need for Speed: SE" on a Win98SE system. It can't seem to detect my sound card. This game used to work fine awhile back. I'm just reloading it after a hard drive replacement. I believe I have the latest DirectX version, if that makes a difference.

Are you getting an error message or just no sound?

No error messages. After the program installs itself, it runs its set-up program. One of the first steps in the set up is to detect the sound card. It runs that ok and just selects "no sound card" as the audio option. Then the program moves on to controller setup (keyboard, mouse, etc.) as if everything is fine. Of course, then I get no sound with the game.

My sound card works great with all other applications.

Is this something you can run in a DOS-compatiblity mode? What's the make/model of your soundcard?

You might try posting in the Win98 forum. I haven't used the OS recently enough to feel comfortable giving much os-specific advice.

The sound card is an older Aureal Vortex 1500. I'm not sure, but I don't think Win98SE has a DOS-compatibility mode. I suspect this has something to do with the not having Sound Blaster emulation enabled. I'm hoping to get that question answered over in the Win98 section.

Thanks for trying to help though. Just seems odd that it used to work. Its got to be something simple that I'm overlooking.
