[RESOLVED] smtp and wireless

I'll try to make this as short as possible.
My neighbor uses an unsecured wireless connection for internet service.
He's been trying to setup Outlook 2003 to use on various free pop3 mail sites (i.e. HotPOP, Yahoo, etc.)
It fails every time (smtp error).
I have looked at all the settings for these mail services he wants to use (on thier support sites) and they were all correct, but still it's a "no-go".
I have heard that some wireless access points don't allow smtp in order to cut down on spam traffic. Can anybody confirm this?

It should work fine if its his own wireless network the only thing I can think of is maybe he has some ports blocked on the router [port 25?].The other possibilty that comes to mind is they have not set up the email options to allow POP3 collection rather than using the on line interface.Do they work from a wired connection?

He's not using a router.
He's got an Airnet 108AWD PCI card with a Hawking range extender attached.
The connection is just a local hotspot, nothing more.
Port settings are all correct. Even tried "optional" supported port settings listed on these websites help sections. It's the ol' "smtp authentication" failure. Passwords are good, I've toggled authentication on and off, there really is no obvious reason why it shouldn't work, but it dont. :)
One thing I will say about this setup, he gets download speeds rivaling my cable, go figure. :rolleyes:

Yahoo will not work with any email program. They insist you go through the web to see all their advertisements.

Well, it's official.
I had no problem setting up and configuring pop3 accounts in Outlook 2003 with some of these mail services using my cable connection.
This wireless access point my neighbor is using is definetly blocking smtp completely. I told him to either live with webmail or talk to his IT guys at work about giving him permission to setup a VPN to access thier mail servers as a workaround.

Works on the co.uk but I think your on the ball about the .com end of Yahoo.

Yes they probably block port 25 to cut overheads.
