Brothers in Arms will not load

I am running Win2000 with a system that well exceeds all of the specs on the box, but the game will not load on my computer. The CD is simply not recognized -- I keep getting a message telling me to insert a CD into the drive. The drive letter in the message is correct and I have had no problems whatever with the drive to this point - I use it regularly for reading CD's, playing music, and making backups. I have tried contacting Ubisoft by email (no response), phone (on hold for more than 15 minutes) and by snail mail (no response) for a replacement CD with no luck. The place where I bought the game has a policy of no returns for opened software.

Any ideas, anybody?

I would uninstall the game and then reinstall it from the drive you intend to use it from. If you continue to have problems I would experiment with drive letters in the drive manager mmc.

Can't uninstall -- it is a new game and has never installed to begin with. The CD may be entirely blank for all I can tell, as the drive apparently never knows the dratted thing has been inserted. Manufacturer is ignoring me, and seller won't accept returns once it has been opened.

First post and I may be way off track but My copy of brothers in arms is a dvd it is a dvd drive you have ? as I said I may be way of track but hope it helps

Well, you have hit on it. It is a dvd. So what do I do about that? I don't have a dvd drive, and I'm not about to buy one just for this game. Ubisoft isn't going to exchange it, obviously, since I am unable to contact them.

I guess I'll have to see what the seller will do. Thanks for the pointer, tho, I never thought to look at that aspect of it. ...right in front of my face. Duh.

Just to add to the, uh, dumbassness of my condition; one of the terms listed on the system requirements is "4xdvd-rom" right there big as life. (Well, no, actually in rather small print, but...) I carefully checked out the video card support and never thought to read any further down.

Oh, fudge.

I'd try talking it back to the shop and telling them you don't have a DVD rom in your machine.

At this point you've got nothing to lose.

For only $20 and a small swallowing of your pride you could buy a DVD-ROM drive.

Good advice, actually.

And I was just discovering that. Pride has nothing to do with it -- I thought they were much more costly than that and am just finding out to the contrary.

Now to make sure I have an ide slot open... usb? Hmmmm. Confusion reigns.

you want to be getting one with IDE. if you only have a CD-Rom in at the moment then you will have one going spare. USB is used if you don't have any but that should not be needed for the vast majority of people.

Actually I have a CD-RW, 2 hard drives and a ZIP. Looks like dvd players of the usb variety are pretty costly, so I'm thinking I don't really need the zip. Inertia is something of a problem, as I really hate working on the hardware.
