Checkdisk problem

Howdy I'm haveing a problem and hope I can explain it correctly..I cant get Powerquest drive image 7.0 to work so I decided to do a chkdsk.I started a .CMD and told it to do a CHKDSK at next reboot.I rebooted and get this error message..
"Checking file system on C.Type of file system is NTFS.Cannot open volume for direct access to check disk.Windows is done checking"
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is.
This is on Windows XP PRO with a SATA raid..

Go to the Command Prompt (All Programs>Accessories) and type "chkntfs /D" without the quotes, then try running chkdsk again.

Thanks for the answer sir but it wouldnt work..This is what I got from CMD.

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve>chkntfs/D

C:\Documents and Settings\Steve>CHNTFS/D
'CHNTFS' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Try to run it from the Recovery Console.

Here`s how
Go into BIOS and set the boot order to
Floppy
CD ROM
Hard drive
Save and EXIT

Insert your XP installation disk and reboot

Let Setup run and it will copy lots of files
On the next page ("Windows XP Professional Setup" menu), select "R" for Recovery Console :
You will be prompted to select the Windows installation to repair :
(usually just 1 )
You will need to enter the Administrator password ! Normally just press ENTER if you did not set a password when installing XP
At the command-prompt (flashing cursor) type
chkdsk /r (there is a space before /)
ENTER

That might make it run

You need to leave a space between "chkntfs" and the "/D".

Ok the problem here is I just looked at system restore in control panel and restore is turned off on the disks.So your suggestion may not work... :o

The recovery console doesn't depend on System Restore. As long as you have a real Windows CD rather than some manufacturer's recovery CD it should work.

Ok I have been thinking about this,I havent tried it yet because like I said I'm afraid doing things I dont know how to do.I have a couple of more questions if someone will answer them.#1 shouldnt the first boot be to the CD drive to boot from the install disk? #2 How much will doing this change my currant system setup? #3 Where can I find a guide or something to tell a computer dummy how to reformat and reinstall WINXP?...

1. You should always keep the floppy as first in the boot order, just in case you need if if the CD won`t boot. When the PC is booting up, if there is no floppy in the drive it will automatically boot from the CD.

2. It won`t make any changes to your current setup. When you are booting normally to the HD, if there is no floppy or CD in the drives it will boot fine to the HD

3. Here are a couple of great tutorials to help you reinstall XP. The reformat is included and is done by XP during the reinstall.

Well Dunedin I did it and it worked,sortof.It ran chkdsk. from the recovery console and said it fixed a couple of things.It still wont run the regular way and Powerquest still wont run..Thanks for all of the help...... :)
