Screens toooooo big...how do i fix this ??

background...i had many problems with my HP Pavilion 8580C that i had to totally re-install my os Win 98...all seems to be ok now BUT it seems that on ALL the different sites that i've gone on, the site is so big that doesn't fit on my screen (this was never a problem before) (i hope i explained this correctly)...the screen is at it's maxium and covers my complete monitor screen BUT i find myself having to move the window around to see all the info...i did check view/text size & it's medium...which is what i've always had.

any suggestions on how to fix this ???

i'm sure it's very simple BUT i'm computer illiterate & am not sure how to do anything.

Try this:
Right click on the desktop. Select properties>settings tab.
Move the slider for resolution to the right. Choose a resolution that works best for you. Click apply. If you don't like it you can choose a new setting. When you're finished click OK.

ProfessorU : thanks for the info BUT i'm at fault for not clearly explaining my problem...i did as you suggessed & it does increase or decrease the size of you sites windows BUT i'm having a problem that the contents of the site is too big for the screen....i know that this will occur occasionaly on some sites...but every site i go on there's abar on the bottom to move the contents over so you can continue to read the info & this happens on ALL sites that i've brought up since re-installed win98...

to give you an example :
my monitor is 19 inches & i can only get webopedia's site message box that i'm typing in now (the window is completely filling my monitor) from the lefthand side to the 1st row of smilies...everything to the right of that is not on my screen...i have to slide the bottom bar over to see anything else.

i don't remember this happening before...plus it's like this for all sites.

does this explanation make my problem clearer or make any sense???

Well it makes your problem clearer. I would try to repair Internet Explorer. You should be able to do this from the control panel>add remove programs. It could just be a corrupt file that's causing you trouble.

Sounds like makbe the text is way to large? Try this ... move the cursor to any blank spot on the web page. Hold down the [Ctrl] key and then roll your mouse scroll-wheel up one or more clicks. (Roll it Up to make the type smaller, or Down to make the type larger).

You can also click View | Text Size and select various font sizes.

If anything has been modified in the browser, like adding Google's search bar, then undo it/them.

Have you reinstalled the monitor drivers yet? 98/98SE supposedly will reinstall over itself like XP without losing files/downloaded programs, but in my limited experience you need to reinstall the peripherals' drivers also. (Monitor, printer/scanner, USB, etc.) Once they're reinstalled, you can reset the resolution and refresh rate for the monitor for whatever size you wish.

to Professor U : if i un-install the IE where do I go to install it again...is there a web site easily available ??

i followed all the steps BUT nothing worked.

after i loaded the Win98 SE & got my computer up & running...i went to the HP site & clicked on the drivers that i need for Win98for my HP pavilion 8580C :

there was one that had to do with the keyboard but nothing else (at least that's what it seemed to me )... i did download the printer but haven't done anything to any thing else such as the monitor, mouse, USB, AUDIO etc. i tried doing a search on their web site to download sound/audio but could find nothing.
someone told me that hp has in their equipment/software,when a re-install win98 is done, to auto do the drivers that might otherwise be needed ;that's why i don 't need to do that....but what do i know??? is this correct ??

Any suggestions as to where i should go to down load the drivers & other stuff...i've checked the hp site...for example under the troubleshooting about PC has NO sound :

BUT nothing worked... when i check start/settings/control panel/ sound (or multimedia...there are NO devices...of any kind.

if i check HP tools there's only the keyboard icon..nothing else!!!

SpywareDr...thanks but i've already downloaded those hp drivers. none pertain to audio or sizing the content in the screen...correct????

You either have a sound card installed in the computer OR you have an on-board sound provision. I just visited the info in the following c/p and you may or may not have done the several steps listed dealing with opening My Computer on the desktop and following the steps in this c/p:

1) my system did meet the requirements & i already had downloaded the program that your link refers me to...it is one of about 5 drivers that i installed after i re-installed win98 as these where the drivers on the hp driver site for 8580c computers...see the 1st driver under the pic that SpywareDr shows on his post ... but i did it again & still no help with the contents being much larger than my screen on all sites.



2) BTW.....you have a FANTASTIC memory...yes this is my dtr's & she's going to kill me when i try to give her a computer that doesn't have sound!!!! i was hoping to give this to her all in working order even though she was upset to hear that i LOST everything in her computer with the 98 re-install & now i'm going to give her a computer w/o any sound!!!! i can hear it now and the sound will be from her not her computer!!!

You actually don't have to unistall IE from add/remove programs. There should be a repair option there also. But like I said, firefox is an effective way to browse the web also, if you just don't want to deal with IE.

ProfessorU...when i clicked on the add/remove button, there is no 3rd option of repair...a message box pops up advising that "this will uninstall IE Q867282 & restores to my previous configuration" do i want to do this??? lmk


p.s. i'm not comfortable trying to get foxfire (which is a whole other story)
