Problem installing graphics card in Win98se

Hi everyone! I recently bought a new graphics card for my main PC, and decided to put my old card in my backup PC. My backup PC is running a dual boot of Win2000pro & Win98se. The type of card i'm installing is a BFG GeForce MX4000 128mb. The card installed without a problem in Win2000. Of course, when it came time to install in Win98se, the problems started. It came up saying "found new hardware" and installed a driver of its own. When it came time to restart, it would just reboot once the Win98 splash screen came up. I restarted in safe mode, and removed the driver that windows installed automatically, and ran the setup program that came with the card. I restarted, and thought everything should be okay. Wrong! Upon restart, windows again came up with "found new hardware", installed it's own driver (on top of the proper one I installed with the card's setup program), and restarted. Sure enough, the pc reboots right after the Win 98 splash screen comes up. I can still boot to safe mode, though. Does anyone have any ideas? Windows 98 is a pain...

Go into add/remove and uninstall the old one.
Go into msconfig, advanced button and set the video to vga 600x480
shut down and instll the new card. Boot up and install the new driver, reboot and uncheck the vga and see if that works out.

I just tried what you suggested, Train, but no dice. It still reboots over and over again when the Win98 Splash screen comes up. I don't understand, the Windows 2000 that dual boots on this system works fine with the new card.

Go to http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp and D/L drivers for new video card by using the "Save" option and save to your desktop or wherever so that you can find them later.
Go to "Device Manager" and remove your original video card and the new Ge-Force video card. At this point it is NECESSARY to reboot into "Safe" mode and go to Add/Remove" programs and remove your original video card and the Ge-Force video card.
Shut down your computer for about a minute.
Reboot your computer to windows and if it loads the windows video card drivers again keep going. Once booted up, go to where you saved the video card drivers from the nvidia website and click on it to execute and install. Once installed you need to reboot to Windows again for the new Ge-Force video card to begin to work.
You might want to update your Ge-Force video card drivers in the future from time to time and if you do remove the old ones in device manager and then it is NECESSARY to reboot into "Safe" mode then uninstall the old ones in add/remove programs just like what you did above. This procedure works for me. Post back if it fixes your problem. Good Luck!

Problem is I'm already using the latest drivers. I can think of a possible cause for this problem though: the motherboard is an ECS. Could that be why this card is giving me such a rough time installing in Win 98se?

Back down several versions then for 98. Something like the 66.90 series will probably work. What i am susing with a GeForce FX5500 card.

For what it is worth, I stopped upgrading my Ge-Force ti4400 drivers at version 56.64 located in the nvidia windows 98 archive located here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_archive.html

Ah, Thanks Train & LD Thornton, version 56.64 seems to have done the trick. I guess newer isn't always better.

Gots to watch that. Like you, most of us have been bitten also.
