Well it could be that the hardware is just too old to run XP. I'd make sure that it's suitable before going any further:

I forgot that it also mentioned making changes in the advanced options?
I have helped with several XP installations and I don't see where hardware is an issue...
I sure would appreciate any help I can get. I am a senior citizen who keeps my mind sharp by learning as much as I can about computing :)
Are you settingthat up as a dual boot?
Or are you trying to do a upgrade?
We really need the actual error message(s). And the notebook specifications would be helpful, the fact is that many machines of Windows98 vintage don't run XP well at all.
