Changed settings
I'm running W2k.
If I suddenly can't connect after months of everything working properly, I figure the ISP changed something in their system. But it was MY dialup settings that changed. And when the security settings for a seldom used and insignificant library file suddenly get changed about the same time, then I get suspicious. The library file has no connection to dialup.
When I checked, it was showing todays date, so the settings were changed today. Both of these changes need access to the admin account.
Both were easily fixed, but otherwise, I have not been into the admin account in weeks. There were no Windows updates to load, so it's not likely the changes were caused by Windows update. And nothing out of the ordinary was experienced. I received one security update from Trend Micro, but I don't think their updates mess with system settings.
Otherwise, the computer is clean of viruses and everything works as normal.
Anybody see anything familiar, and can tell me what caused this?

If no one else has had access to your computer to make the changes then I'd suggest running hijackthis and posting the log so we can have a look at it...
Follow all the instructions here..

and copy/paste the log into this thread and then we'll move it to the hijack forum.

Hi Fink,
This is looking to be an auto-update, possibly from MSDN, but can't establish that it is.
There were a total of three programming libraries that had their security settings changed. The fact that they were made MORE secure sort of points to Microsoft, but can't figure out just exactly who did it. I suspect that some vulnerabilities were found in these files, so the necessity to make them more secure.
My Windows Update settings are set to inform me before loading, which they have always done, but there was no mention at all of this update.
They VIOLATED my computer FOR THE BETTER! EEK! Terrible thing.
I'll see what this post collects. The change in connection settings is just plain weird.

So the dialup number and password didnt change just some of the other settings?

The Phone number and password were not changed.
Looking at connection properties there is a provision for setting the Modem protocol and Initialization. These are the settings that changed. If not set correctly, then the connection won't complete. This just happened out of the blue, since I already made one connection within an hour previous. It seems more than coincidental that these settings changed about the same time the library files were updated.
I tried to check the security logs, but still can't read them after a boot to the Command Prompt. I need to find a way to read or copy the Security log during boot up (or shut-down), which may help answer some questions.
A search hasn't turned up any documentation on these updates yet.
