IE Help Please

After our last automatic update, which was Monday,we have started having this problem. When we try to shut down our computer, we get an error message; Internet Exlporer (or program) not responding, and it has a place you can click to end now or cancel. If we click end now it will go ahead and close and log off. If we click cancel it just sits there. So we try to log off again and the same thing happens. What was on the update that may have caused this "not responding" message? Our laptop has been doing the same thing for a few weeks longer. It takes a long time if we do nothing and let it sit there and try to respond. It is annoying.

We have Win XP, IE 6. We have not upgraded to SP2 at this point if that matters. Thanks.

You could try a repair of Internet Explorer:

There are 2 Ways you can repair,try one and if it doesn't work try the other:

Method 1:

1. From the Start menu, select Run.
2. In the Open field, type sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
3. Select the OK button.
4. Follow the prompts throughout the System File Checker process.
5. Reboot the computer when System File Checker completes.

Method 2:

1. From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
2. Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
3. Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
4. In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
5. In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
6. Click the Search button.
7. In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
8. Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
9. Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Thanks liam. Neither of the steps worked. It still is not responding. I will try it on my laptop and see what happens there. Any other suggestions? It worked fine until the last automatic update.

I would try clearing all of your temporary internet files+history+cookies, and also what spyware/virus scanners do you have installed? If they are the usuals, as in my sig, then run them and see what(if anything) shows up.

I have cleared the files, history and cookies as well as the java cache. I use adaware, spybot, trend micro (it picks up stuff the others don't) and our AV scan. I think it is something to do with whatever updated the last time because it did not do it until then. I have looked but see nothing out of the ordinary. Thanks for the help.

I suspect your IE upgrade didnt work as planned.... Try to restore your system prior to the IE ungrade. This will take you bakc before IE turned on you...

Thanks P2E. I will try that. Also, we have not upgrades to SP2 yet because I have been reading about all the errors etc after it is installed. Should we go ahead and upgrade to SP2 or wait awhile longer?

I installed SP2 4 months ago or thereabouts and no problems.

As a note SP1 is in SP2.

I have had no problems with SP2 at all. In fact, it contains a great popup blocker as well.
