Server CPU interoperability

Hi all

I am trying to find out if I can take the CPU from the IBM eServer xSeries 205 (P4) and put it into the IBM eServer xSeries 232 (P3 Originally)...

I rang IBM Tech, the guy I spoke to was next to useless. Something along the lines of "if dont turn on then no, it wont work"! Can you believe it? He did, however, say that they use same socket. Not too sure if I can trust him on that.

So, the main points to consider are:

Will it fit?
Does the 232 support P4?

I have googled so much goole doesnt like me anymore...

You're right to be suspicious, they don't use the same sockets. Pentium III used either a Slot 1 or a Socket 370. Pentium 4's use a Socket 478 or 423.

I also asked him if the RAM was transferrable, he said, "If the machine boot up saying Memory not compatible then no it wont work".

Ever feel like you're talking to a brick wall? For starters the RAM runs at diffeent speeds (that I know coz I found out myself).

You should be more careful with your analogies...the brick wall might be offended by the comparison.

As for the RAM, your first problem would likely be that the new stuff wouldn't physically fit in the old board (SDRAM versus DDR-RAM).

How is it you have such major components that you're trying to re-use in the older system?

I know, I thought the same thing. But one of my colleagues was insisting that I should 'double sheck' to make sure. Basicallywe have these components (CPU + RAM) out of the 205 series, and was hoping to upgrade a server for one of our client (who has te 232).

Never mind, confirmed my doubts and got first hand experience with IBM support.
