how common are dead pixels on LCD?, good brands?

my grandfather was talking today, and was like "why do you still have that old bulky monitor?" you should get one of those nice LCD monitor..
and I told him that paying upwards $700 for a LCD monitor that would be big enough for me wouldn't be worth it since I was planning on getting a 21" CRT for ~100 on ebay

anyways, later he called me at work and was like "I saw this LCD monitor, I think I am gonna get you one.., you need to pick out one, ur uncle sent me this deal for a 21" samsung for ~$650".., so I guess I am lucking out and am going to get a $600 or so from him..; dual monitor time :) :) :)

I am concerned out dead pixels tho.., cause they drive me crazy and I've been told that no manufacture warraunties cover them..

is there any good brands you can recommend?, I would like to get a viewsonic but they are expensive.., how are samsung's or dells, ect.?

Go fer...er...go for the Samsung. Excellent quality. The possibility of a dead pixel or two just comes with the technology I'm afraid.

I bought a Cornea 18"er last year, been very happy with it (500:1). They're out of business now, but you can e-bay them pretty cheaply. Got a Balance 19"er a few months ago for under $300. brand new. No dead pixels, and it's great - nice huge display (700:1).

Hard to say....its basically luck of the draw....

But samsung's have excellent track records.

Also I do believe manufactureres have a 8 and above dead pixel policy when it comes to LCD replacements....could vary from manf. to manf....

Yep, some manufacturer's have a low pixel replacement policy, when i got my Benq i had quite a few that seemed to grow, and i took a picture with a digicam and sent Benq the picture and they said that they has a 5 dead pixel return policy and i qualified for a new monitor, it came about a week later, no dead pixels in this one,:) and i still have 2 and a half years of guarantee left(if anything should go wrong)

I would recommend the Samsung too, nice, quality displays.:)

You may find that some suppliers will do a dead pixel check on any brand of monitor as well, I know that there's at least one UK supplier does that (for a fee).

that would be nice if I could find a supplier that will ship to my area that will do a dead pixel check; well worth a little extra money, I think.., specially on a $600 screen

well.., I can't find an suppliers that will check for dead pixels here in the states...
also, the samsung I was gonna get has a 25ms response time, I completely overlooked it before.. what is a good response time, the viewsonic has a 16ms response time.., I do game, how much will that matter?

I see many recommend Samsung. I bought Samsung SyncMaster 213T 3 mo ago and I love it. No dead pixels, sharp, refresh rates (albeit said to be too low for gaming) nothing I have noticed or bother my. It's a good brand, I just wish I had two...

well, 25ms means that is will be refreshed 40 times per second.., 40Hz
for the 16ms, it is 62.5Hz..
ussually a refresh rate considerer optimal is ~75Hz...

I am guess the industry changed units so that people wouldn't be driven away with much less values for refresh rate then is considered good on a CRT..

I had this same hesitation before making the switch to LCD. I hate dead/stuck pixels. So I just spent the extra few bucks on a product replacement from the store. They claim that they will replace the monitor if you are unhappy. I specifically asked them about dead/stuck pixels, and they said even if there is one - if that means I'm unhappy, then I can bring it back and swap with a new one. Mine fortunately did not have any, so I haven't been able to test their warranty.

I recently bought a Viewsonic VP912b 12ms response time. No dead pixels, very sharp image and works great for gaming. Its not the best in its class but I like it.
