wmv3 codec troubles
I got some video files containing the wmv3 codec but I can't play them with Windows Media Player 10. Isn't it sad? media player can't use media player codecs. I tried reinstalling wmp 10 but no changes. I downloaded the wmp7+ codecs and installed them but still no changes. Real Player, divX player and BSPlayer can't read them either. I have no idea what to do next except getting medieval on Bill Gate's a**.
Why do they have to use that many different codecs and create new ones every day when the old codecs work just fine...
Oh well, I hope anybody can help me.

I think WMP 9 works with that format for playback, i could be wrong, other alternative could be to convert it to a different format.

Yes, it should work with WMP9 and later. Have you ever installed any non-MS codecs or codec paks? Like this one...

That's what I use and my WMP 7 and 9 both play wmv* files. The download also includes Gspot, a small utility that can identify some codecs used to create a clip... might be worth double checking the clips to make sure that they have the right extension. Gspot is freeware that can be downloaded on its own as well.

I have no problems playing normal wmv files, only wmv3 files. And yes, I've installed another codec pack, the cole2k media codec pack.
And the file extension is .avi not wmv. And when Media Player is trying to look for the wmv3 codec on the media player homepage it can't find it.

Did you try WMP 9?
Other suggestion would be:Avi Converter

Yes, come to think of it I can't absolutely be sure I've used WMP7 for wmv3 files... perhaps WMP9/10 would be a solution.

I've been using WMP 10 for several months and the files have the extension .avi but contain the fourcc codec wmv3.
Do you think I should unistall WMP 10 and install WMP 9 instead?

That's what I'd try. Even though whatever 9 can play 10 should as well.
