my computer has the specs listed in my sig and i wanted to know if and how i could overclock my 6600gt. i was advised not to overclock with my miss matched ram but is this still the case if i only overclock the video card?

A good article on overclocking different brands of the 6600 GT card over at Anandtech. Just bear in mind that if you plan on overclocking that card, it is best to use a 3rd party cooling solution rather than the stock cooler. I also recommend using Rivatuner for overclocking. GO SLOW. Go in small increments (5mhz at a time) and watch those temperatures very closely.
You should be able to overclock that card despite the mixed system memory. Realize of course that your memory is running at the speed of the slowest stick (2700). I would recommend matching up your memory speeds as soon as is feasible. Your biggest problems would come with attempting to overclock your CPU, rather than the vid card.
ok sounds good i'll give it a go. don't know how i'm going to monitor the temp as i seem only to have sensors on the CPU, HD, and Mobo and not the card. and what’s the problem with running them at 2700? 3200 wouldn't make that much performance difference would it?
It isn't so much performance, its the fact that the memory is mixed that makes it not run as smooth, if it was 3x 3200 sticks then it would be easier to process than having a mixture across the slots.
I found a guide to get an update that gives you a temp monitor specifically for your card:
It states: Please follow these directions carefully. If you are not comfortable doing this, by all means, don’t!
How to enable temperature monitoring on Nvidia GeForce 6600 cards.
Good Luck.

cheers there, well found. i have now got the temp sensor working and the GPU's at 75 idle while the max recommended is 140! so what temps should i be looking at not going over cause that seems like a large margin? also when i went into my Nvidia control panel it has an overclocking section (which I’m sure wasn't there before) and it scans your system and gives you a recommended setting. Should i follow that?
Hoping that is fahrenheit, on the guide Bistro posted the idle temp for most of the cards was 33-42 Celcius, and the load temp was between 58-98, If that max temp is in fahrenheit the 140F = 60C so i would say that is pretty good going. And you can probably push it a little bit more, depends on how much of an improvement you get, you may not need to go to extremes.
Celcius/Fahrenheit Converter
Nice page for converting temps so that you can relate temps properly.
Liam
unfortunately not Fahrenheit.
Here’s a pic to show you what it says. and i tested it with futuremark05 with the recommended overclock from my Nvidia control panel and after about a minute the picture started to go green and purple :( . when i exited out the temp was at 90C
Ouch, Are you using a stock cooler? these temps may improve with a third party cooler. I would suggest following Bistro's instructions on going up in increments and see how the temps react and if you find a stable level then stick at it.....after you have a new cooler.....should be cheap too so its not all bad news.:)

Fed up of buying things for this god damm graphics card! so I’ll leave it as it is and see how it runs in game. if it's causing me any problems I’ll put it back to it's original settings.
Yep, i know what you mean, ok, post back to let us know how it goes.Quote:
