I have my AMD64 3400+ overclocked to 2433mhz
when idle the temp stays around 36-38
I looked at the temp while I was encoding video and it was up to 52 in seconds
how high is too high? I would hate to fry my chip.
BTW, this is all in the winter, my Mobo temp is 19 right now, I assume that when my house's temp is up to 80(F) or so, my CPU temp would rise with it..

Actually, with the desktop AMD64s the max tollerable case (die) temp is lower than the 32-bit Athlons. With the AMD64 the max temp is 70c, so you want to worry well before that. You're fine at 52c under stress though.
What are you using to measure those temps? I would question tha accuracy of the mobo temp at least, as that is showing pretty much room temperature, and I would expect it to be higher than that. If you don't already have it this is a nice utility for monitoring temps, and it's always good to get a second opinion:

I have been using ASUS PC probe, which came with my motherboard and Everest.
both give about the same temperature.
I have a thermostat in the same room and it also shows the temperature and it is almost always about the same temperature.
right now my mobo/room is 21(69F), which has increased my idle CPU temp to 38-40, which makes me wonder what is going to happen when the room temperature is around 80F to 85F in here.., I am going to have to watch those temps.
I did notice that everest gives me back a HDD temperature. I don't know where it gets this temperature at all unless it is somehow built into my HDD..
also, Everest says my CPU fan is going ~1800 and my Chassis Fan is going ~2700, in which I am almost certain it is the other way around. ASUS Probe displays it the way I believe to be correct.
I'll attach a screen showing the two apps, tell me what you think about the HDD reading and the different fan readings..

A couple questions on some of the stuff here...
In your first post you said you had an AMD64 3400+. In the everest sensor info you posted it shows you have an Asus A8V motherboard. There's an inconsistency here. The A8V is a socket 939 board, yet there is no AMD64 3400+ that comes in the socket 939 style (only socket 754). So is your processor really like a 3500+?
Also, the sensor info you posted shows your vcore at about 1.7v. This is VERY high for and AMD64 (which for the socket 939 3500+ would be 1.5v default at the most). Are you over-volting that much?

Honestly I think that is a typo, and it is really the AMD64 3500+, as the specifications they give match the 3500+.
As for the over-volting... Over-volring by as much as you are will definately hurt your processor (cause it to run much hotter, and reduce its life expectency). Your processors default voltage should be 1.4v. Even to overclock like you are you do not need 1.7v (assuming the 1.7v reading is accurate).
FWIW, I overclocked one of my P4's by 11% without needing to increase Vcore at all. You should only increase the Vcore if you start to experience instability, and even then not by very much unless you're using some very extreme cooling.
umm.., my the chip itself says 3400+ on it.., I remember..
and in device manager it says 3400+

I will have look around in the BIOS a bit.., I thought that the automatic overclocking would do its job correctly, I might have to actual learn how to overclock..
I was lazy, so I tried the automatic and it looked like it was working.., so I didn't bother..

EDIT-
I just turned off my overclocking and everest now says that my CPU is a 3500+, where it used to say it was a 3800+, did I get a 3500+ that is marked as a 3400+?; it also says 3400+ in the BIOS...
and I am also now getting a vcore of 1.54, are you sure 1.4 is default?
BTW my CPU temp is now at 33
On your voltage now reading 1.5v... That is fine. There actually are 2 cores of the amd 64 3500+ (both socket 939), the Winchester and the Newcastle. The Winchester uses a default voltage of 1.4v, and the Newcastle uses 1.5v. So you obviously have a Newcastle core, and your voltage reading now is fine.
Clearly the overclocking feature of your board has some issues, at least with your particular processor (which a bios update may or may not resolve). But, with the overclocking turned off you are now seeing normal temps and voltages. What you had before was WAY of wack and therefore shouldn't be used.
As for the 3500+ vs 3400+... Based on the stepping (DH7-CG) and the revision (FF0h) that is definately a 3500+ Newcastle core.
PS. Remember, the way overclocking is done in with AMD64s is a bit different that with the non-64 AMDs.
well, I have come to a conclusion that the automatic overclocking is not very intelligent..., seeing as I have overclock to 224x11 with a 1.54 vcore and I have not had any problems with stability..
I think that maybe "overclock 10%" actually ups everything 10%..
200*1.1=220
1.54*1.1=1.694
it would make sence..
also, I beleive that there is infact a 939 3400+ processor..

939 3400 was a limited run chip that runs at 800x2 (1600) HTT instead of the usual 1000x2 (2000). This makes absolutely zero difference in performance except in extreme cases of bus or I/O saturation, so the performance is basically the same as a 939 3500+, but the chips were only originally sold paired with approved mobos if I remember correctly, so yes, you *might* run into some compatibility problems. Then again you might not. I would think the chip would work OK, it just might not identify properly in the mobo BIOS.

anyways, how far do you think I can push my FSB?, my CPU temp is really low right now with 224..; it only gets to 46 on load..

OK, did some tracking down... You are right there "was" a socket 939 Athlon 64 3400+ available for a while, but only as an OEM processor. That explains why it was not officially documented by AMD, and why it was only available in package deals like TigerDirect offered.
By the way, do you have at least bios version 1009 installed for your board? That is the minimum Asus requires to properly support that processor.
I seem to have revision 1008..
I guess a BIOS flash is in order
