Cannot find msconfig

Cannot find msconfig

When I type in msconfig using Run from the Start Menu it states it cannot locate. ( for some reason this started a few days ago, I did 2 system restores but it didn't correct the problem ) I did find the file in the PCHLTH Ctr folder and created a shortcut that I can use, but I would like to be able to do access the old fashion way. How can I get the correct path back?

Have you a XP CD, if so, put that in the computer and then go again to Run, and type in sfc /scannow. That will fix any corrupt or missing files.

I didn't think XP had MSCONFIG ??

Maybe that was 2000

Beg your pardon Nix, but XP does have msconfig, I use it here on my XP Pro and those at work also. :D

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I do not have XP cd, is it still possible to type in sfc /scannow without the cd?

Only if the source files (both the orgianal and/or any from an applied service pack) are on the hard drive somewhere.

pupadorn3--I do not know for sure where Start|Run expects to find msconfig, but I would guess C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE .
Perhaps you could try putting a copy of the msconfig.exe file you have in PC Health (or download from SuperSparks' site recommendation) in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE folder.

The MSCONFIG.EXE should be in the C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries directory (what's in DLLCACHE is only a backup for windows file protection). Then, in the registry under the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\MSCONFIG.EXE

set the value of Default (in the right hand pane, a string value) to the path
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe

Note: There is not space in CurrentVersion above. For some reason the board software just seems to be sticking the space in.

DrMDJ--Thanks for clearing just where Start|Run runs from. :)
BTW, it is a bit of a nuisance, but you can avoid the break in "Cur rent Version" by putting almost any IMG tag before and after the word that is broken. In other words, in this case you would type, for example, {color=black]Current[/color] . (Of course the { should be a [ ) You will find the break occurs in strings of over 50 characters.

Appreciate all the information, I think I'll just use the shortcut I pined to the start menu, it seems to work just fine. I'm still puzzled as to what happened that I lost the path to begin with.

Yes, I do see what ya mean and will keep this in mind as a workaround. But i may post this in feedback as a bug since we really shouldn't have to workaround such things.
