Greetings: I have been an avid reader/learner here since about 1998 and have always been impressed with the knowledge, courtesy, humour and wit of so many of the regulars. I used to look forward to Friday nites...very refreshing to read the sharp and witty comments...the wealth of trivial knowledge was amazing!!!! Your computer knowledge wasn't too shabby either!!! Okay...buttered up enough??? :) I have IE6 ( I know..haven't switched to FF yet :rolleyes: ), 98SE, cable modem, AV anti-virus, SpybotS&D, Ad-AwareSE, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, CWShredder, ZoneAlarm...all are kept up-to-date. Thankfully I have never had a virus, trojan, worm, etc...But just in the past couple of days I have begun to get this weird thing with my browser suddenly going to the white screen where it says "Page cannot be displayed" ( it just happened again!!)...and in the address window is: http//result=7; allow=0. When I close that window I am taken back to where I was...like here...typing this question. Could this be something to do with my cable connection???I have a Motorola SB5100 Surfboard modem...occasionally I will lose cable connection but I am not sure if it's my modem or perhaps from the cable provider...I just assumed that it was the cable people but as I write this I begin to suspect that it might be my modem?? Have you reset your modem?
I turn the computer(s) of , unplug the modem for about 20 seconds, replug it in and wait for the modem to reset itself. When it is back up fire up the computer and see what happens.

Sounds like a blocked connection to me.Have you checked your firewall log?

Train...yes, I had a different name and pass but after I moved out to the country and set up the 'puter the HD decided to die...I wasn't looking forward to having to go back to dial-up after having DSL when I lived in town...so I just went "cold-turkey" from the 'puter for a while which ended up being over a year until the local cable co. made broadband available....so I figured just to start fresh with VrDr. But I still miss Friday nites!!!! Okay...my situation: so far the weird window thing hasn't happened this evening. Since I have cable, the 'puter is automatically 'online' by the time the desktop window appears and when I would click on the Explorer icon to go to my home page this weird window thing would happen...even though I was still 'online'. But I went ahead and dis-connected the cable modem from the cable lead and from the usb connector...re-hooked up and re-started the 'puter. So far...so good !!! Thanks, Train, for the suggestion...I hadn't really thought about the cable modem getting buggy but why not...it's just another piece of electronic gear. Hello, 104456: I took a look at the log and in the 'source IP' column I did see several repeat back-to-back attempts but the ZoneAlarm help page said that it was probably just some garden-variety stuff...thanks for the information. As soon as you can, I would defintely gtrid of that usb connection and go with a nic. I have fought some real duzzies caused by the usb. Cable ad dsl. UUUGHHHHH!


That resetting usually does not need to be done very often, but once in a while it does.

Train..when you say to go with an nic., is that the same as an ethernet? there is an ethernet place on the cable modem...or do I need to get another type of modem?? BTW...re-setting the modem seems to have helped the speed at which pages load...interesting.

Nope keep the modem. You hook a CAT 5 cable (ethernet cable), relatively cheap and can be gotten any computer store, wal mart, radio shack, on-line./....

You hook the CAT 5 cable from the modem (WAN port) to your ethernet connection on the computer. That's it. Now you have to have an ethernet Card in your computer or a ethernet connection built into the motherboard. If you don't invest in a PCI ethernet card, they are cheap. The speed difference betwen USB and Ethernet is VERY NOTICEABLE.

So using dsl on ethernet is faster than on USB ???

I went from dial up to 256Kb dsl using USB connection.

I was very impressed with the improved speed.

But you are saying that if I install an ethernet card and hook the ADSL up to that, I'll get even more improvement ?

If you look at the speeds:

• standard USB = 11mbps
• USB2.0 = 400mbps (allegedly)
• ethernet = 10/100mbps

1. USB uses a lot of your system resources. Ethernet tends not too...

2. In my opinion Ethernet is the preferred option for connecting a broadband modem , for the following reasons:

a. Ethernet is technically more reliable than USB for networking. You are less likely to experience dropped connections or sluggish response time to your modem when using Ethernet over USB.

b. Ethernet cables can reach a longer distance than USB cables. A single Ethernet cable can run most anywhere within a home (technically up to 100m (328 feet), while USB cable runs are limited to approximately 5m (16 feet).

c. Ethernet supports higher performance networking than does USB. This is the first advantage of Ethernet that many techies notice, but performance is actually the least relevant consideration in this list when choosing between USB and Ethernet connections. Both Ethernet and USB 2.0 interfaces support sufficient bandwidth for broadband modem networking. Modem speed is instead limited by the speed of the modem's connection to your service provider.

I personnal use CABLE, I have trioed both USB and Ethernet, Ethernet was definately faster then USB, and I could actually notice the difference, especially with downloads. I download a lot, for trying out programs, then remove them, download more ect...

My connection loads a 322,649 bytes in 0.941 seconds and my throughput is 2743 Kbps now obviously this is dependent on the server you are testing on and distance from your ISP or computer.

You may top 1500 Kbps with DSL (which I have never used) but I really suspect a lot less than that with USB DSL..

When you say ethernet is 10/100 does this mean between 10 and 100 as I'm guessing it doesn't mean a fraction as in 10 over 100 or 1/10th

Is it faster than USB2 at it supposed speed of 400mbps ?

Well don't hurry up and go out and get a card because I told you too. The PCI etherbet cards can be gotten relatively cheap (under $20). You may want to invest then you can hook up each way, do some speed test, analysis, then determine which is the best for you. I have never used DSL so am not in any way an authority on it. Been cable all along.

Murf, please don't feel that you in any way pressured me to go spend my money...I am very good at that without any help!!! I remember now that when the cable guys ran the cable and hooked up the modem one of them suggested the ethernet card but since the 'puter was zipping along just fine...relatively speaking...I kinda forgot about it. I need an excuse to get into the case and install a dvd drive so I will do both. BTW...that weird windows problem hasn't happened anymore since I dis-connected/re-connected the modem....good news...but I'm still gonna get the card. Take care...
