ipod locking up w2k

Installed fine.
Went to use it, and it locks up the entire computer, requiring a hard shutdown and reboot.
Resets, but still won't work.
Batteries are charged.
D-Link USB 2.0 card is working, has it's own drivers.
If CD is playing music, as soon as the ipod is plugged in, it locks up the CD drive.
Computer won't boot with ipod plugged in.
New \W2k install w/sp4.
New Via 4 in 1 drivers installed.

will it work with other USB devices?

Everything else works fine, including the ipod.
