Experience of a lifetime
We got invited to go check out a bear den here in PA yesterday. They had put a radio collar on the mom last june so were able to track her to her den. She was darted and the babies taken out. There were 5 babies all boys. We got to hold them. They were all weighed and tagged. The babies weight ranged from 3.4 - 4.4 lbs. They were about 2 mths old. Black bears are born on average around january 15th. The mom was weighed and measured....she weighed 307. They removed the radio collar to put a new radio transmitter on an ear tag. It was one the greatest experiences I have had. Don't be fooled by my screen name on here...I am a female. LOL

Wow, that must have been a wonderful experience :) :)

Very nice. What happen to the cubs? Did they leave them with the mother or take them to a shelter to raise?

that looks like it was a neat experience

They leave the cubs with the mom. They are all put back into the den as they were found. The purpose for doing all this is to get an estimate on how many Black Bears are in Pennsylvania and how many cubs are born. They get the weight and measurements which are recorded along with the ID numbers from the tags.

That really sounds neat. I wish I were somewhere, where I could do something like that. :)
