Sheer Frustration

Check this out,

I use AOL at home and i wanted to set up outlook on my xp machine to use my work email address, in case i wanted to monitor it from home....

anyway to cut a long story short, i installed an smtp server program (aol refuse to provide an smtp server) and when i tried to send a test email, it failed. The log on the smtp server said this:


"AOL has blocked this bulk mail program, please visit http://blablahblah.com"

so i went to this website, looking for a solution only to find out that, and i quote: "AOL reserve the right to block third party and bulk mailing programs, we have to protect our other members"

Have a day off!!!!!

Sorry to hear that, this is just one of the reasons of many, that people should not use AOL. I would not use them if they paid me to do it. BJ

I agree wholeheartedly with BJ. AOWell is infamous for it's proprietary installation technique and all the hassle it causes. Learned this the hard way many moons ago and wouldn't touch it with the proverbial ten-foot-pole myself...:rolleyes:

yes it's all true i also hate the AOL service, but unfortunately certain other members of my family know nothing else and will not change to another ISP.

thanks for the link steve, i will try that after work tonight. Do you know if that will work for any mail account?? i assume that i will need to specify that the smtp server will need authentication.....

It should work for any "AOL" account.

"Click the Servers tab, and then click to select the My server requires authentication check box."

AOL is the only virus that people willingly pay for.

i think i already realise this but does that mean then, that i cannot set up a pop3 mail account and set it's smtp server to be the AOL one. All i need is an SMTP server to send outgoing mail.

Last time i tried to do this was a few years ago and the only way i could get it to work then was by using an smtp server that allowed anonymous sendng, whose ip address was given to me by a freind. As i can't remember this IP i cannot do this again. AOL just told me flatly that in no way was it possible to use a pop3 account.

I have now managed to get it to work, as steve posted you need to put your aol screename into the outgoing mail server login details BUT if you put a password in it will NOT work - You must leave the password blank, and it will work.

This is pretty strange but who cares if it works
