sharing internet access wirelessly
in the near future, a wireless broadband company is suppost to put an access point not too far from where I live, so I am finally going to be able to get broadband (w00t)
the only problem lies in the fact that the residentail plan has a limit of 6 GB's a month.., and one of the reason I want broadband so much is because of fansubbed anime.., which will blow that 6 gig limit out of the water
the business plan, however almost twice as much, but it is 3 times the speed (1.54mb), and it doesn't seem to have a limit
the price, however, is too high
I think that I can talk my uncle (lives next door) and my friend (lives about 1/3 a mile down the road) to split the business service 3 ways, that way it will be cheaper then the residentail service, and I will not have to worry about that limit. They were planning on getting the service as well...
I plan on have a server computer running at all times, a PII 400 with 224MB of ram running windows 98SE (I may switch to linux after a while tho, ounce I have practice with it), it will act as a router between the users using kerio winroute
from what I have looked up, it seems that I should have a WAP set up, and I have also found out that there are numerous software ones that I could use.., is there one that anyone recommends?
do I really need one though?, how does peer-to-peer wireless work? can I be connected to more then one person peer to peer?
and how do I bridge the two connections together, will the software WAP do that for me?
another problem is that my friend is a little out of range of the 1/4 mile range max that can be aquired.., so I may need to get a 6 db or so antenna.., or make one, (cantenna here I come)
thanx in advanced,
Byan
