audio issues

I am a student and currently taking an online class using my web cam (Logitech), headset (Cyber Acoustics) and I am having audio issues. My fellow students can’t hear me and I can’t hear them (at one time they could hear me and I could barely hear them-but my speakers were giving me so much feedback-“squealing” that I had to turn them down and then that’s when no one could hear me).. I think it might be in my settings but not sure. I moved my speakers far away as I thought I was getting feedback from the headset/speakers.
The school is using a software called CTM (Click to Meet) and I have been on the phone w/help desk from the school, the professor, and numerous people and still no help. Does it sound like I need a new sound card? I am running Win2000 Pro

If your sound card is multi-channel, eg 5.1, you'll have a control panel somewhere (often a taskbar applet) to change the sockets from outputs to inputs. Have you checked there to see if your mic input has got its setting changed to be the centre/sub output?

If you've already gone over this, we'd need to know some more detail about your sound setup (eg type of sound card) to suggest more.

I show two sound cards listed:
1. Creative AW E64 Wavetable MIDI (WDM) AWE32 Compatabile

2. Creative AW E64 16bit audio (SB16 compatible (WDM).

but I do not see any type of place to change the sockets.

OK, the AWE64 is a regular stereo card, so it won't have those options to re-assign the socket functions. The two devices you see are two separate functions of the card.

Apart from making sure the mic is in the mic input not line, and mic in not muted, the most likely thing that comes to my mind is to check if the card has Full Duplex enabled:

In the Device Manager, click Properties on the AWE64 16-bit Audio Device. Go to the Settings tab and if the box to enable full-duplex is not checked, check it, exit Device Manager and restart the system.

Then look to see if the CTM software also has an option to choose between half-duplex and full-duplex operation, if it has set it also to full-duplex.
