Hi Robert M.,
Good evening. Check out this site. It has all the older browsers. You might want to consider going ahead and installing IE 5.5 Sp#2 instead of IE 5.01.
Regardless, here is the link: IE Browsers
Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks
MIE 5.5 SP2 is supposedly for Windows ME only and can't be used in Windows 95. Read here.
Hi flavallee,
I ran IE 5.5, SP#2 on my Win95a machine for more than a year before a major crash several months ago forced me to format and reinstall everything. I might add the crash had nothing to do with the Browser but rather my own stupidity.
Then when I was ready to install IE 5.5 again I inadvertently loaded up Sp#1 instead of Sp#2 and have never bothered to upgrade it back to Sp#2.
Here is a link that tells you it is still possible. Once on the link click on 'Browsers' for full details.
IE 5.5, Sp#2
Thanks for posting.

I'm glad to hear it's working for you. I've heard that Microsoft has kept it available just for Windows ME users.
The LightSpeed site is a good site for Windows 95 users and for "hard to find" downloads. I've had a link to it in my website for years.
Flavallee,
Thanks for the heads up tip about IE 5.5.
Had forgotten it requires ME or better.
2hartsforever,
I tried that link and it says the page cannot be displayed.
2hartsforever, Is it legal to download any of those IE versions from the website location you specified?
Also (anyone) what are the main differences between Internet Explorer version 5.0 and 5.01?
Thanks
Hi Robert M,
Sorry you are having trouble with the link. I just clicked it again and went right to the site.
I am typing this reply on a machine which is running IE 5.5, Sp#1 on a Win95a system. The only reason it is Sp#1 instead of #2 is when I reinstalled it I thought it was #2 but it was #1. I always say why try to fix it if it isn't broke.
Here is another link you can try and yes, to the best of my knowledge, it is completely legal to download and install the different IE versions from these links.
Three more IE download links
Good luck!

Thanks,The link seems to work today.
Yeah, I'd like to run IE 5.5 if possible.
But, I also don't want any hassles down the road.
I wonder why they say it is supported on Windows ME?
Does that mean it will run with 95 if you meet the hardware requirements, but that Microsoft will not provide service help if you run it on a computer with Windows 95 as your only OS?
Hi Robert M,
I don't know the official answer but most likely they consider Win95 already 'dead' whereas ME still receives limited M/S support.Quote:

That's the meaning I take from it. But, for the record, in the three years I have been using IE 5.5 on my Win95a I have never once thought about going to M/S for support even if I could have. I have found that Help Forums such as this one and a few others can supply more than enough 'expertise' to keep it up and running on my old system.Quote:

I can't see any 'legal' hassles if that is what you are referring too. People download and install IE versions off the net all the time. Now if you were trying to 'pirate' a copy of an operating system, i.e, Win95, Win98, XP, etc., now that would be a different story.Quote:

Or, if you mean 'hassles' with the operation of IE 5.5 itself, you will never be up the 'creek without a paddle' as long as you have these help forums.
Go for it!

I have no trouble running and installing IE 5.5 sp2 on 95. Or the updates for 5.5 that are suppose to be only for ME. I don't know why everyone is making a fuss over this. You can get IE 5.5 for 95 off an aol CD with no service pack at all or you can download it from evolt.org or you can get the 95 Opti pack from ON-disk.com.
Thanks, I think I found just the part of IE 5.5 which will allow an upgrade from 5.0 on the following page found under the "standalone" section. The one I need looks like the fourth from the bottom of the list. Can someone confirm?
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/standalone
Thanks
2hartsforever,
Whether they consider Windows 95 dead or not should not prevent me from finding out if IE 5.5 works OK with 95, especially if it does work OK with 95.
For example: I don't care whether or not they support this arrangement, (IE 5.5 on 95), I just wanted to know the most recent browser available and functional for 95. Wish they had specified that fact also.
Well I decided to try the fourth from the bottom in the link I referred to in my last post...Had a few problems.
First, the README file states something vague about the file downloads being for testing purposes which I don't understand.
Next, clicking on the UK...United Kingdom site which supposedly performs the download I had problems. Was expecting to be prompted about where to save the file, but I get a bunch of hard disk accesses.
Apparently this prompting does not happen because that link ends with the file extension "ZIP". Nevertheless the file seems to be downloading. After a few seconds it seems to stop but the hourglass is still visible, clicking the browsers stop button causes a lot more unexplained hard drive activity.
Finally after all this:
Trying to execute a file on my desktop called IE55SP2.EXE where the "download" was placed causes many error messages.
What's going on? What a cheesy website for downloads.
Its possible you only got a partial corrupted download.
Try downloading the full 84mb install of 5.5 sp2 from http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.5_SP2
I don't trust that website because I wasn't told what to expect with regard to the download and with regard to all the hard disk activity. What's all that about? If I trusted that website, it would take me many hours to download 84 MB. Guess I'll buy a copy of Office 2000. I understand IE 5.01 or IE 5.5 may be included with that. However, I'm open to any other suggestions
