CA eTrust ver 7.0.6.7
Have been using CA AVP for 7 plus years. Have *ALWAYS* found their 'upgrades' to be something of a hassle.
Just yesterday, updated to ver 7.0.6.7 & things have, again, gone badly. No. Worse than that - horribly.
Install process does not/cannot/ will not complete - hangs at the 'updating sig files/modules' portion of the install process, which I believe is an ftp process.
Reboot + C-A-D at the desktop shows a bunch (all?) of the AVP modules running - some not seen before the update.
However, upon reboot, no usual CA AVP icon in the lower right portion of the task bar. I am unable to register or update sig files manually - just hangs at the ftp site(s) w/no d/l activity = major cramps & program shutdown issues. Start>Programs>&tc will not load the program. Just results in the infinite hourglass = more program shutdown issues. E-mail (OE via IE 6) = no send or receive - even resulted in no internet connectivity (Comcast broadband). Plus more blue screens than I've ever seen, hard locks & shutdown/restart issues.
The *ONLY* resolution to all of that was to uninstall the 'updated' AVP proggie.
I believe my older freeware version of Zone Alarm firewall (ver 2.6.88) may be a factor in this equation. Many moons ago, rolled back to this older ver of ZA in order to make nice nice w/eTrust AVP.
So here I am w/a paid-for-but-totally-dysfunctional 'updated' AVP proggie, which is not just useless to me but destructive when only 'partially' installed. However, in today's world, I would rather go w/o an AVP program than w/o a firewall.
Questions: anyone using this version of eTrust AVP w/a freeware version of ZA firewall, w/what ver of ZA is it compatible? If it matters, this is in a W's 98SE environment.
Thanks to any and all that take the time to read or respond. Credit in Heaven to anyone that can help me resolve this little issue.

I uninstalled ZA, rebooted a couple times. eTrust 7.0.6.7 installed just fine.
ZA was the stopper.
Using Sygate 5.5 now and it is a lot easier to work with.

I use the latest eTrust AV along with ZA vers. 3.7.211 on my XP-Pro with no problems at all. Can't find it online anymore, but if you'd like to try it,pm me with an addy and i'll send it to you.
ps: It worked well with Win98se also, but of course, that was with an older version of eTrust. So no guarantee's...:)

Train, thx for the info. Nice to know there is a 'last resort' soultion available. I really like the CA AVP proggie but donwanna have to learn a new firewall proggie unless absolutely nec.
Ridgerunr, ty for the kind offer to e-mail me ZA vers. 3.7.211 but as you note, "It worked well with Win98se also, but of course, that was with an older version of eTrust. So no guarantee's..."
poppy4, sounds like maybe ZA version 5.5.062.004 may be my best bet at this time. I appreciate your hesitancy & decision to 'wait for the fallout' before updating to the latest freeware ver of ZA. If it aint broke, don't fix it, which is why I'm in the mess I'm in now - CA gave me no choice but the update to ver 7.0.6.7.
Again, ty all. When I finally get this squared away, I'll be sure to post back w/the version combos of AVP & firewall that worked for me - I hope! :p

My guess is that there are a couple of things going on...
First, CA has publicly stated that ZoneAlarm 2.6 has issues with eTrust EZ AV and should not be used with it. (This was posted over at the dslreports.com security forum a few months back.) So you do need to update to a later version of ZA. (If you don't want the latest 5.x version ZA, here is a ZA link to the last well received 4.5 version. http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/fre...45_594_000.exe )
Second, CA is having difficulties with users getting updates. There is a user forum for EZ (you are using EZ yes?) where this is being discussed in detail. http://forums.ca.com (Just go to EZ forum after getting by the 1st couple of screens.)
Hopefully, CA will get the update issue solved soon and once you have ZA updated, that issue should go away.
Good Luck!

HAN, ty for contributing to this thread. Your advice was spot on. I had missed CA's 'public statement' re incompatibility w/ZA ver 2.6, which has made for a very long weekend but w/a happy ending.
From the ZA forums, did the following to uninstall ZA
"Go into the start menu and the zonelabs entry and right click on the uninstaller and select properties. Now in the target box you need to add a space and then /clean to the end so that it looks something like this "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean then click apply and then OK. open ZoneAlarm at your taskbar go to Overview>Preferences and turn off the load ZoneAlarm at startup option, then reboot and then run the uninstaller (the one you change the shortcut for) This will get rid of ZoneAlarm for you. Now go to your C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder and delete everything with the name ZLT* (ZLT followed by anything). Do not delete files unless they are Zone Labs files. Then find the folder named C:\WINDOWS\ Internet Logs and delete the whole folder. Clean the history in Internet Explorer or your current browser, clean the cookies. Then empty your recycle bin. ZoneAlarm should be gone."
CA EZ Antivirus ver 7.0.6.7 is now fully compatible w/ZA freeware ver 5.5.062.011. So far, all is good!
Maybe I should be less hesitant to 'update' my sw but old habits die hard.
